Shabhaash Mithu: When Is Biopic On Mithali Raj Releasing?

The upcoming film Shabhaash Mithu is a biopic on cricketer Mithali Raj. The Shabhaash Mithu release date and the teaser trailer have been revealed.

Recently retired Mithali Raj was the former India women’s national cricket team Test and One Day International (ODI) captain. Actor Taapsee Pannu plays the role of the former captain, who is considered one of the best women cricketers.

After Mithali Raj led India to the finals of the 2017 Women’s Cricket World Cup, Viacom 18 Motion Pictures acquired the rights to make a feature film on her life. Raj said that she hopes “this movie inspires more people, especially young girls to take up sports as a career.”

Shabhaash Mithu is directed by Srijit Mukherji and written by Priya Aven. Lead actor Taapsee Pannu trained under Nooshin Al Khadeer, the former cricket player and friend of Raj.

Mithali Raj, who was last seen in a game during the 2022 Women's Cricket World Cup retired from all forms of international cricket on June 8. In her statement, she said, "I feel now is the perfect time to call curtains on my playing career as the team is in the capable hands of some very talented young players".

Pannu took to Instagram to write about Raj’s numerous achievements and spoke about how Raj had changed people’s perception of cricket.

Pannu’s statement said, “You changed the game, now it’s our turn to change the perspective”. She called her “our captain forever,” and said that Raj was “etched in history”.

Regarding Shabhaash Mithu, Taapsee Pannu said “When we call ourselves a cricket-loving nation, do we only mean a men’s cricket-loving nation? Or a cricket regardless of gender loving nation? These are the questions I wanted to raise, and this film became a medium for that.”

Pannu said that Raj taught her about “resilience and perseverance” and called her a “legend we can never thank enough.”

Shabhaash Mithu Release Date

Principal photography had begun on April 5 2021 but was delayed due to the COVID-19  lockdown. The film wrapped up filming on November 9. The Shabhaash Mithu release date was revealed to be July 15 2022.

The upcoming film Shabhaash Mithu will mark Taapsee Pannu’s first theatrical release after her movie Thappad, which was released in 2020.
