The duo had worked together in the 1989 film, Sati, which is based on the life of Uma, played by Shabana Azmi. The story talks about an orphan brahmin girl who is married to a Banyan tree because her horoscope suggests widowhood. The popularity of the film was such that it is still accounted as one of the best works in the history of Indian cinema.
Other than receiving nine national film awards and a Padma Shri, Aparna Sen is popularly known for her films like The Japanese Wife, Chotushkone, Paromitaar Ek Din, 36 Chowringhee Lane and many more. She started her career as an actor at the age of 15 with Sampati, which is the third part of Satyajit Ray's Teen Kanya trilogy.

Aparna Sen has been known for her strong opinion and films underlining social issues. Her last film, The Rapist won the Kim Jiseok Award at the 26th Busan International Film Festival in South Korea. The film starred her daughter and acclaimed actress Konkana Sen Sharma, who plays the role of a middle-aged academician who wants the person who raped her to tell her why did he do it.
Konkana Sen Sharma is known for her popular films like Lipstick Under My Burkha, Talvar, Wake Up Sid, Omkara, Life in a Metro, Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi and many more.
Sharma, too, wished her mother on Twitter by posting a selfie with her. She wrote, "Happy birthday to my own legend! It's been a great view standing on your giant shoulders! Thanks for being my Mama (with three heart emojis) @senaparna."
