In a recent cover story for Vanity Fair, singer Selena Gomez shared her personal plans to start a family within the next few years. During the interview, the 32-year-old opened up about her inability to carry her own children due to serious health issues.
Selena Gomez Says She ‘Can't Carry’ Her Own Children
Gomez, who underwent a kidney transplant in 2017 after battling lupus, spoke candidly for the first time about her difficulties with pregnancy. "I haven’t ever said this, but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children. I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while," she shared
Though it was initially hard for her to accept, Gomez explained that she has now come to terms with the situation."It’s not necessarily the way I envisioned it. I thought it would happen the way it happens for everyone. [But I’m in a much better place with that," she said.
Gomez expressed her gratitude for alternative paths to motherhood, including surrogacy and adoption, both of which she is considering. "It made me really thankful for the other outlets for people who are dying to be moms. I’m one of those people. I’m excited about what that journey will look like, but it’ll look a little different. At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby," she added.
Moreover, during an appearance on the cover of Rolling Stone in 2022, Gomez revealed that it would be dangerous to bear children due to her bipolar disorder medication. She had explained that after she visited a friend trying to get pregnant she broke down in tears as she thought that having a child would not happen for her. However, she added that she was hopeful that she would still be a mother through other means. Gomez said, “That’s a very big, big, present thing in my life… However I’m meant to have them, I will.”
The singer is currently in a relationship with record producer Benny Blanco. The pair have been dating since July 2023.
