Movie Pagglait: The movie that has shown an interesting insight into the life of a widow and how she may react to being one is the Sanya Malhotra starrer Pagglait.
The movie revolves around a woman whose husband recently dies and her family and friends are trying to support her mentally. But they are also expecting her to mourn for her loss in a certain way and when she doesn't, they are in turn labelling her as 'crazy' meaning Pagglait.
As the movie touches upon a very important subject about the stereotypes that are associated with a widow and how society wants her to behave in a certain way. With the same, if she behaves any different than what they expect her to, she is termed to be 'crazy'. Ironically, the most iconic dialogue that Sanya says in the movie is, " Jab ladki log ko akal aati hai na, tab sab unhe Pagglait hi kehte hai", meaning 'Girls are labelled crazy by the society when they actually taking their decisions using their own brains'. Here's what we know about the movie so far-
1. The cast
The cast of the movie Pagglait includes -
- Sanya Malhotra as Sandhya (protagonist)
- Shruti Sharma as Nazia
- Sayani Gupta as Ananya
- Natasha Rastogi as Shruthi
- Sheeba Chaddha
- Meghna Malik
- Ananya Khare
- Ashutosh Rana
- Raghubir Yadav
- Rajesh Tailang
A striking feature of the movie would also be the female cast including the protagonist and the women in her family who try to convince her to behave a certain way. The great actresses like Meghna Malik, Sayani Gupta, Sheeba Chaddha, and more become crucial as the story progresses.
2. The crew
Pagglait is beautifully penned by our director-writer, Umesh Bist. The production of the film is done by Shobha Kapoor, Ekta Kapoor, Guneet Monga, and Achin Jain under the banners Balaji Motion Pictures and Sikhya Entertainment.
The composer of the soundtrack is Arjit Singh who has also written the lyrics along with Neelesh Mishra. A fun fact would be that this movie is the first time we see our favourite singer Arjit Singh as the composer.
3. Release date
The wait for the movie is over soon as it all set to release on the 26th of March, 2021. Again, a fun fact, 26th March is very special as it is the lead Sanya Malhotra's birthday. With this, the movie would be available to be streamed on Netflix.
4. The change in the narrative
For years of cinema, we have seen very few movies like Mother India (1957), Chokher Bali (2003) wherein a widow is seen as an empowered woman with her life in her own control. As the stereotypes around widows go around believing that a woman becomes helpless after her husband's death, the same is not called true for widowers. Society does not consider men to be affected by their wife's loss in fact he is happily accepted to continue engaging in his love life with other women. But it is almost taboo if a widow does so.
Remember Rahul from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai? Rahul and Anjali had a whole love story that nobody felt awkward watching even though Tina, Rahul's wife had died in childbirth. And why would it be awkward? Because there's nothing wrong with it. True. Similarly, there's nothing wrong if a woman does the same. As it's her life. And she isn't dependent on her husband for her happiness but only and only herself.
Pagglait is one of the few movies that break the barriers that widows are seen in and expected to follow. The movie is a must-watch. Have a look at the trailer -
