Lately, Hayek is being vocal about her experiences in Hollywood. She has talked about the lack of agency that female actors get on film sets and everything that goes behind the scenes that went behind the scenes of her Hollywood films
Racial discrimination
Hayek in her recent interview talked about the way she was treated because of her Mexican background. She recalled an instance when she was told that her career would "die" mid-thirties. "First of all, they told me a Mexican is never going to make it, because at the time, the new generations, it was impossible for a Mexican to have a leading role in Hollywood," she said.
Female actors and Ageism
Salma Hayek pointed out the way only women in Hollywood are discriminated against because of their age. She said that female actors are told that they will be "over" by the time they cross 30 years of age. Subverting the same, she said that ageing is a beautiful thing and "we’re not ‘over’ at this time, or at another time. If you’re creative and enthusiastic and curious about life, life can be exciting forever, the entire time"
Lack of agency given to female actors
Even though she said that the industry is evolving now but that doesn't mean that there is no more work needed to be done. Hayek while talking about the changing face of Hollywood said that women artists are still underpaid and the industry is finding it "hard to adjust because they are not used to paying" something to women. She said addressing the women in the industry, " Your wealth is, of course, not as big as the guys".
Uncomfortable sex scenes
She recently spoke up about being uncomfortable on the set of her 1995 film Desperado, her breakout film. Hayek revealed that she was asked to perform a sex scene with her co-star which wasn't even mentioned in the film script. She said it was demanded by the film studio. "When we were going to start shooting, I started to sob, " she shared. Hayek was refusing to let go of her towel which was covering her.
Working with Harvey Weinstein
Salma Hayek worked with Harvey Weinstein in her renowned film Frida. The actor has opened up about her experience on the set and had revealed that Weinstein also threatened to kill her. Hayek has claimed that Weinstein harassed her sexually and emotionally. "He made my life miserable when we were shooting it, and I came out of it and I said, ‘I won. I beat him at his game. I’m not a victim. I healed. I’m a fighter, I’m strong," she said.
