Indian professional badminton singles player Saina Nehwal is in spotlight once again with the release of her biopic Saina. The movie will be covering the journey of Saina, the girl from an ordinary family, to being the face of Indian sports.
Saina, directed by Amole Gupte, the biopic is set to be released on 26th March, 2021 in theatres. Parineeti Chopra appearing as Saina Nehwal has created a lot of buzz. Here are five things we all are expecting to capture in the movie:
2010: Commonwealth Gold
Saina Nehwal became the first Indian woman to win a Commonwealth Games gold in the badminton singles event in the year 2010. This gave the entire nation a sense of pride, especially women. Nehwal beat Malaysia's Mew Choo Wong 21-19, 23-21, 21-13 and bagged the gold medal. The gold was India's 38th gold at the games which added to the significance of the win. Hence, this significant win is surely something viewers are waiting to capture in the movie.
2012: Olympics Bronze
Nehwal once again made history by being the first Indian shuttler to win an Olympic medal. Saina contested and won against Sabrina Jaquet of Switzerland, Belgium’s Lianne Tan 21-4, 21-14 and Dutch sensation Yao Jie and made her way to the semi-finals. In the semi-final, Nehwal lost to Wang Yihan of China. This loss forced Nehwal to fight for the bronze against another Chinese player. Nehwal was declared the winner in the bronze match as the opponent sprained their ankle and were unable to continue the game.
Although this match of Nehwal was not one amongst her greatest wins because of the complications, Saina's refusal to give up is something we would all love to see in the movie.
2014: China Open Gold
The China Open Tournament went very well for Saina. She won the tournament in the women's title. This victory is one of the most significant victories for Nehwal as she won the tournament after five attempts. Her sixth attempt was very fortunate for her as well as the country. Hence, this achievement is something that redefines sportsman spirit and the movie would be incomplete without the portrayal of this victory.
2015: All England Silver
In the year 2015, Nehwal had the chance of grabbing the title which had long evaded the Indians. Nehwal started the final against Spain's Carolina Marin winning the first game 21-16. However, Marin won the second round. Although Nehwal had to settle for silver, this victory is one of the high points of Nehwal's glittering career.
2015: world championship silver
Nehwal played against Marin for the World Championship Gold in the year 2015. Nehwal lost the finals against Marin, however, was able to secure the title of World Championship Silver. This title was also among one of the 'firsts' of Nehwal. The whole country had huge expectations from Nehwal in this match. Hence, viewers anticipate to watch this achievement in the movie.
