From Doctor Strange To Gangubai, Here Is A List Of Theatrical Releases On OTT

Pandemic has changed a lot of things in the world we live in, including the entertainment we consume and how it is consumed. It has not just changed lifestyles but the pattern of consumption too. The rampant and all-mighty theatres used to rule the film releases and Friday was considered a life-changing day for many but not anymore.

As technology and way of life evolve along with the adversities that go parallel, new methods of watching cinema are bound to develop. For us, it was the online streaming platform. Creatives and filmmakers started depending on the online streaming platform for a profitable return for films during a time when the theatre was completely shut down.

Things did start kicking back as lockdowns were lifted and theatres opened their doors again, however, there was a clear distinction in the types of pictures working or released in theatres and OTT. Although, one pattern that stayed was to release a film on OTT weeks after it has released in theatres.

Recent Theatrical Releases On OTT

In the past few months, we have seen the pattern in many films—including regional, Hindi, English and others. In recent times too there has been a list of films that were released in theatres and can also be watched online. Here's the list of films:

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness 

The film is a sequel to Doctor Strange and the main plot point runs around the line of if Doctor Strange, played by Benedict Cumberbatch will be able to fight the threats that have come in due to him opening the portal by mistake. The sequel will see the reprisal of Doctor Strange and Wanda Maximoff, played by Elizabeth Olsen. It will be a lead from the incidents that take place in the Spider-Man No Way Home in 2021. It can be watched on Disney+ Hotstar from June 8, 2022.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Gangubai Kathiawadi

Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the film is about a sex worker and her life of highs and lows. It traces the journey of Gangu, played by Alia Bhatt. Gangu wanted to be an actor, so she elopes with her lover under the guise that he will be providing her with the opportunity. But he sells her in a brothel in Kamathipura, Mumbai. The film traces her growth in the place and her journey to activism for children's education and sex workers' rights. It can be watched on Netflix.

Jhund 

Based on the life of Vijay Barse, who was the founder of Slum Soccer, which is a non-profit organisation, the film stars Amitabh Bachchan in the lead role. He coaches at a gated university and is nearing retirement when he chances upon a group of kids from the nearby slum, whom he finds potential. Directed by Nagraj Manjule, the sports drama film takes the route of exploring the caste and class differences in society. He takes the concept of gated community heads on and never misses an opportunity to show it in the film clearly. It can be watched on Zee5.

Jhund

The Kashmir Files 

Directed by Vivek Agnihotri, the film was first released in cinemas and created much noise. It is about the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from Kashmir in the 1990s. It was not just the plot of the film that divided the viewers but also the promotion of it. The film was declared tax-free in many states and was promoted by word of mouth by even Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi. The cast for the film included Anupam Kher, Pallavi Joshi, Darshan Kumar and Chinmay Mandelkar, amongst others. The film will soon release on Zee5 on May 13.

Runway 34 

The film stars Ajay Devgn and Rakul Preet Singh as pilots of a flight which on Devgn's character's decision is landed despite warnings of bad weather. Later the pilot's action is investigated by Amitabh Bachchan's character. It is a turbulent tale of Captain Vikrant Khanna and the mysterious trajectory which leads to a rule being broken. The cast members include Boman Irani, Adhira Dhar, Aakankasha Singh and Carry Minati amongst others. It will be ">released on Amazon Prime.
