Netizens have not taken Bollywood star Ranbir Kapoor's remarks on his pregnant wife Alia Bhatt's weight gain kindly. In the soon-to-be-released film Brahmastra, directed by Ayan Mukerji, Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor will make their debut joint appearance. For a YouTube live on Thursday to promote their new movie, the triad had gotten together.
When questioned during the live session about why they are not actively promoting Brahmastra in the same way they do for other films, Alia Bhatt responded, “We will promote the film, and we will be everywhere but if the question you are asking is why we are not phaeloed everywhere, right now our focus is…”
Ranbir Kapoor Apology
Ranbir Kapoor interrupted her at this juncture, reportedly suggesting to his wife's growing belly, and stating, “Well I can say somebody has phaeloed (referencing her weight gain).” He did, however, add that his remark was intended to be humorous.
Ranbir was asked to clarify his remark during the media event because some people were offended by it. He quickly expressed regret and then admitted that his sense of humour is lacking. Referring to Alia as the love of his life, Ranbir said, "Firstly, I love my wife with everything I have in my life. It's a joke that didn't turn out to be funny. It wasn't my intention. I apologise to those who got triggered or offended by the same. I spoke to Alia about it later and she really laughed it off and didn't mind it. I really do have a bad sense of humour and sometimes it falls flat on my face sometimes. I am sorry if I have hurt anyone."
Even though Ranbir made it clear that he was joking, many social media users took offence to it and later criticised the Shamshera actor for allegedly "fat-shaming" Alia. A video of the exchange was shared on various social media sites, including Reddit.
Communicating shock at Ranbir Kapoor’s observation, one user noted, “My ex was like this. He would say things about my weight and personality and try to pass them off as jokes. Alia should run far away from him.”
Another one conveyed, “Exactly. Slow abuse. Slowly the intensity increases if you keep on tolerating it. Classic Narcissist!”
A third person reported, “Calling his pregnant wife fat is not what I expected from Ranbir.”
Occasionally, people also thought it to be “leg pulling” and said that this much is admissible when you are wedded. A fourth user said, “Maine socha kya aisa bol diya...He is joking about his wife not someone else's wife ... it's casual leg pulling...people who laugh at crude husband wife shouldn't be offended by this much”.
