Show The Activist Changes Format: Ever since The Activist was announced to go on air last week, it has been facing some serious backlash on social media. The CBS show is set to be hosted by Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Usher and Julianne Hough. After the criticism it faced, The Activist has reportedly changed its five-episode format to a one-time documentary special, the air date of which is yet to be announced.
The show aims to pit six activists against each other, in competitive challenges and evaluations. Success is to be measured by using social media metrics and funding. Many users criticised the format for being insensitive and argued that even when the show has the budget to bring on huge celebrities, they chose to make the activists, who are fighting for important causes, compete for resources, activism is not a competition.
According to report by ZeeNews, after the comments, CBS and producing partners, Global Citizen released a statement announcing the change. The statement read, “‘The Activist’ was designed to show a wide audience the passion, long hours, and ingenuity that activists put into changing the world, hopefully inspiring others to do the same. However, it has become apparent the format of the show as announced distracts from the vital work these incredible activists do in their communities every day."
Further adding that a push for global change is not a competition and requires a global effort. They are changing the format to remove the competitive element and reimagining the concept into a primetime documentary special. The show will now showcase the tireless work of six activists and the impact they have been advocating for causes they deeply believe in. Each activist will be awarded a cash grant, as was planned for the original show.
Global Citizen also said, in a separate statement, saying they apologise to the activists, hosts, and the larger activist community for getting it wrong.
