Priyanka Chopra and Kabir Bedi sat down on video conferencing and discussed their insights on being an Indian actor in Hollywood. Check out the thoughts here.
Kabir Bedi and Priyanka Chopra interacted via video conferencing and spoke about their life journey and the books that they have recently released. Kabir Bedi shared his experience of breaking into Hollywood in the 80s and said that he had stardom in Europe as he was a rage across the continent. When Bedi entered Hollywood he was expecting them to be impressed by they didn't care about where he lived or which car he drove.
Priyanka Chopra Jonas replied to this and said, "The problem was that in those days, Hollywood just wasn’t writing roles for Indians or Asians, so how do you get a role if it is not written for you? I’d protest in trade papers, that it is wrong. When they did have a role for an Asian, they didn’t have a hesitation painting a white actor brown and giving him the role. So, this was the other problem."
Priyanka Chopra Jonas further shared her insights and said that even though she didn't have to change her name, she had to teach people how to pronounce it correctly. Chopra told them, "If you can say Oprah, you can say Chopra."
She added that she had to be ethnically ambiguous to a certain extent to be able to get mainstream roles. Chopra also said that even in the Quantico series she had to play the role of a half Indian-half American person. She added that she couldn’t step out there being Indian. As it was too alien for Hollywood, Chopra said.
