Mainstream films are in a tough competition with the regional films owing to the diverse and unconventional content streaming on the OTT platforms. With the massive change brought in by the pandemic in our content consuming practices, many more regional films and web series are getting the attention they deserve.
Especially, with OTT spaces including regional content into the lineups, shifted the focus to non-mainstream cinema beyond the language barrier and gained popularity for regional artists on a pan-India level.

Navarasa

The Tamil anthology drama focuses on nine human emotions-fear, vengeance, hatred, confusion, deceit, longing, anger, regret and more- portrayed in nine unique stories. The Netflix project created by Mani Ratnam has been described as “an anthology that will hit every emotional chord.”
Eighteen Hours
Where to watch: Manorama Max
The Malayalam film helmed by Rajesh Nair is a survival thriller. Speaking of the film, screenwriter Vinod Jayakumar said, “It revolves around an abduction incident with female characters in the thick of the action”.
Kuruthi
Release date: August 11
Where to watch: Amazon Prime Video
Kuruthi, a political thriller, marks the directorial debut of Manu Warrier in Malayalam. The film starring Prithviraj Sukumaran was described by the makers as "a socio-political thriller that has got a bit of drama, action and thrilling elements”.
Netrikann
Release date: August 13
Where to watch: Disney Hotstar
The forthcoming a murder mystery Netrikann centres around a visually impaired woman played by Nayanthara. She witnesses a murder case, police has been investigating, and decides to bring down the serial killer targeting young women. Ajmal Ameer plays the antagonist in the film.
Aani Kay Hava Season 3
Release date: August 6
Where to watch: MX Player
The third part of the drama series focuses on Saket and Jui, a newly married couple who have moved into their first house. As a newly-wed they experience many firsts, while discovering themselves and their relationship.
