Oscar 2023: 5 Indian Movies That Made It To Qualification List

Five Indian films are in the Oscars 2023 longlist - which means they will now be voted upon by Oscar members and stand a chance for nomination.

Five Indian films may be headed to the Oscars this year, under major categories including 'Best Picture' and 'Best Actor', according to the longlist released by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. This list has a total of 301 feature films.

The 95th edition of the Academy Awards which we popularly know as the Oscar Awards is all set to be held on March 12, 2023. All the movies from the qualification list will compete officially under various categories to get an official entry at the grand Oscar.

According to reports, the 9,579 eligible voting members will be filling out their ballots by January 17. The nominations will be announced on January 24.

Here are 5 such Indian movies which made it to the Qualification list of Oscar 2023.

A) Kantara

The Mega hit Kannada movie Kantara directed by Rishab Shetty has been included in the qualification list, under the 'Best Picture' and ’Best Actor categories. After the announcement of the list, the makers of the movie 'Hombale Films' came forward to express their joy via a Twitter post, in which they wrote "We are overjoyed to share that 'Kantara' has received 2 Oscar qualifications! A heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported us. We look forward to sharing this journey ahead with your support. Can’t wait to see it shine”. The movie has recently completed 100 days of its release in the theatres and is still running in many.

B) The Kashmir files

The movie The Kashmir Files directed by Vivek Agnihotri made it to the qualification list for Oscars 2023. The director of the movie expressed his feelings of excitement about the same via a Twitter post. "The Kashmir Files has been shortlisted for #Oscars2023 in the first list of @TheAcademy. It is one of the 5 films from India, I wish all of them the very best. A great year for Indian cinema. Pallavi Joshi, Mithun Chakraborty, Darshan Kumaar and Anupam Kher are all shortlisted for the best actor categories for the Oscar. It is just the beginning. A long, long road ahead. Pl, bless them all." Said the Vivek Agnihotri.

C) RRR

SS Rajamouli's RRR can be seen in the qualification list for Oscars 2023 as well, with RRR track Naatu Naatu being the first ever Indian song to be shortlisted for the Oscar Awards. A post was shared by the official Twitter handle of the blockbuster movie which notes "We are honoured that RRR's overwhelming success represented Indian cinema on the global stage by creating milestones at the worldwide box office and uniting film buffs across the world by transcending linguistic & cultural barriers,". As per the reports, this blockbuster movie grossed over Rs 1,000 crores in collections worldwide.

Meanwhile, SS Rajamouli's blockbuster won Best Original Song for Naatu Naatu at the Golden Globes. They beat the likes of Rihanna and Taylor Swift.

D) Gangubai Kathiawadi

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Gangubai Kathiawadi, starring Alia Bhatt is included in the qualification list for Academy Awards too. This movie based on the life of Gangubai Harjeevandas, who was an Indian social activist and the madam of a brothel in the red light area of Kamathipura Mumbai, grossed over Rs 209.77 crores worldwide, becoming the fifth highest-grossing movie of the year 2022 for Hindi movies.

D) Chhello Show (Last Film Show)

The movie from Gujrati cinema Chhello Show(Last Film Show) written and directed by Pan Nalin has been selected as India's official entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the Academy Awards. The story revolves around a Nine-year-old who is obsessed and fascinated by the cinema.

E) Rocketry: The Nambi Effect

R Madhavan's directorial debut Rocketry: The Nambi Effect is included in the qualification list for oscar 2023. The story revolves around Nambi Narayana, an Aerospace engineer and former Indian Space Scientist, popular for developing liquid fuel engines getting embroiled in a spy scandal. Madhavan came forward to share his thoughts about being included in the qualification list and said, "This movie continues to give. The journey gets more rewarding, and we are all in a daze. First of all,  love of the people around the world. Nambi sir, getting the recognition he so richly deserved and NOW this, what more can I ask for from my directorial debut? The excitement begins again."
