The Odisha police on Monday arrested Odia actress Mousumi Nayak, following a complaint filed by writer Banasita Pati, on charges of blackmailing and denigrating the public image of a young lady writer.
39-year-old Nayak was produced in a local court and later sent to judicial custody on the charge of defaming Pati, by alleging that she owed the accused Rs. 8.5 lakhs. Pati alleged that Nayak had made claims of lending the money to invest in the stock market but did not repay her.
Here's What Happened
According to the media reports, Nayak had first lodged a complaint against Pati with the Infocity police in Bhubaneswar, a few months ago. However, a few days later, the actress withdrew her complaint following the writer’s "assurance" to return the money.
In an interview with Kalinga TV, Nayak said, “I feel very bad that our 12-year-old relationship ended because of her money-mindedness. Banasmita is younger than me and I considered her as my sister. She does business in her field and I do the same in my field. Many times she had given me moral and emotional support when my business was operating at loss. However, now I considered those things as ‘drama’ and a trap for money."
She further said, “I just request her to return my money and that too without any interest. However, instead of returning, she is issuing threats to me, which is why I filed complaint and brought the matter before the media.”
Nayak lodged another complaint against Pati in September with the Chandaka police, claiming the writer forced her into an escort service and threatened her when she demanded her money back. Pati's lawyers denied these allegations and alleged to file a case of defamation against the actress.
Mousumi Nayak Arrested
Writer Banasmita Pati moved the High Court of Orissa on the plea that the Ollywood actress, Mousumi Nayak, had hampered her social prestige by levelling false allegations against her, as well as extracting money from her.
The Infocity police of Bhubaneswar registered a case against the actress under Sections 385 (extortion), 294 (obscene acts), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 507 (Criminal intimidation by an anonymous communication) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) as per the court order.
The arrested actress has acted in several Odia, Hindi and Telugu movies.
