Actor Nakuul Mehta, who has shared a long-standing relationship with his now-wife Jankee Parekh since he was 18 years old, recently discussed the non-traditional gender roles they embraced in the early stages of their partnership.
In a recent interview, Mehta expressed gratitude to Parekh for taking a chance on him personally, given his limited financial resources, when they decided to tie the knot.
Nakuul Appreciates Jankee
During an appearance on the Be a Man Yaar show, Mehta shared insights into their unique bond. He mentioned that in the initial years of their marriage, Parekh was paying a significantly higher amount in income tax annually than he was earning himself. Mehta emphasised that Jankee never made him feel inadequate due to his level of success, even during periods when he faced professional challenges.
He said, “We were never the traditional man-woman in a relationship. In three-four years of our relationship, she was paying more income tax than I was earning.”
Explaining their unconventional approach to their relationship, Nakuul stated that they were never the traditional man-woman duo in their partnership. Within the first few years of their relationship, Jankee was contributing more to income tax than they were earning.
He added that he hailed from a financially comfortable family background, while they came from a service-class upbringing. When they decided to marry, they faced the reality of Nakuul not having a job and his bank savings being less than Rs 1 lakh. Nevertheless, she chose to put her trust in him.
He further revealed that Jankee has always encouraged an equal partnership and has never pushed him to conform to traditional husband/provider roles. Their financial contributions were shared based on practical considerations, and their unspoken dynamics have taught him the importance of being an equal partner in their relationship.
In 2012, Nakuul and Jankee became husband and wife. Their family expanded in 2021 with the arrival of their first child, a son named Sufi. Nakuul is most recognised for his roles in the second and third seasons of the popular television show Bade Achhe Lagte Hain.
