Elsie Fisher and Amiah Miller respectively play high school friends Abby and Gretchen in the horror-comedy My Best Friend's Exorcism, which is set in 1988, and whose relationship is tested by otherworldly forces.
Director Damon Thomas' movie, which is based on the 2016 novel by Grady Hendrix, centres on Abby and Gretchen, best friends who go on a walk after spending the night at a friend's parents' cabin and end up in a bizarre place in the woods. Gretchen experiences a negative event, and she thereafter begins to act abnormally. Christopher Lowell's portrayal of an evangelical Christian wrestler alerts Abby to the notion that spiritual forces may be at play.

The director admits that choosing the two leads for the Atlanta-set film was devilishly simple and extremely challenging. "Elsie Fisher was in a great film titled Eighth Grade and she was very much in our minds right at the beginning," states Thomas, adding, "She's a very naturalistic actor; she feels very real, and she's the anchor point of the movie in terms of, she's the audience's POV. I saw many, many, many auditions for Gretchen because you need to have someone who is the natural leader of the pack but also can 'go there' during the possession and play those genre beats. I thought Amiah was brilliant. And she was scary on a Zoom!"

Beginning with a positive attitude, the &t=1s">trailer gives the impression that the film will follow two teenage best friends as they go through a typical coming-of-age story set at a high school. Up until about 30 seconds into the video, that is what it initially seems to be. The atmosphere then quickly changes and becomes much darker and foreboding. Gretchen and Abby, two girls, decide to enter a house where, allegedly, a girl had been sacrificed in a Satanic ceremony. Gretchen persuades the hesitant Abby to go along despite her reservations. On September 30, My Best Friend's Exorcism will make its Prime Video debut.
