Since its release, the partition scene is being widely talked about on social media as the users cannot stop to express how they felt about the scene. While it was emotionally and spine-chilling for some, others found it historically inaccurate.
Ms Marvel Partition Scene
Ms Marvel episode four takes us deep into the roots of Kamala's power during her journey to Pakistan where she meets Waleed (Farhan Akhtar) and Red Dagger (Aramis Knight) that tell her more about the Earth and the world of Djinn. Kamala's conversation with her grandmother was an emotional one as she tells her about the partition that forced her to move from her home and which event holds an important part in Kamala's life as well as the train that she sees in her dreams is the one that her grandmother took to reach Pakistan.
In the scene, her grandmother can be seen saying, "My passport is Pakistani; my roots are in India. And in between all of this, there is a border. There is a border marked with blood and pain. People are claiming their identity based on an idea some old Englishmen had when they were fleeing the country. How is one to deal with that?"
The scene had many users on Twitter in tears because of how the pain and struggle of people were filmed. A Twitter user wrote, "The scenes of the partition in Ms Marvel today were so chilling and are very real. Those memories have been told through generations. I’m glad they’re not shying away from these stories"
A user called the scene accurate as they wrote, "Kamala's Nani described the Partition of India perfectly. It's not just a significant historical event in world history. The long-lasting horrific memories of that experience still terrorize millions of South Asians to this date" For others, the scene was historically incorrect as it said that Britishers forced partition while it was actually Muslims who wanted a separate state due to different treatment they got in India.
Schooling on the history, one user wrote, "I will raise my kids and grandkids with a strong sense of 2 Nation theory & Ideology. Will pour down their chests the pre-independence stories my Nani narrated to me. We can't let #MsMarvel teach our new generation the Indian g@rbage prōpàgánda narrative (forced partition)." However, for many desi as well as international fans, the scene, that showed masses of people fleeing the country in fear, was horrifying and it depicted how much the innocent people suffered at that time.
Seeing the story featured in a Marvel series and how it was connected to Kamala's roots was praised by many as one user wrote, "It is absolutely amazing that Ms Marvel taps into the legacies of Partition for its main story! Partition and the trauma and loss that accompanied it are so crucial to the South Asia story. As someone who studies Partitions legacies, this makes me incredibly happy." Fans felt that it was a great way of acknowledging the pain that still haunts the victims of the partition.
Meanwhile, the show ended on an interesting cliffhanger with Kamala's bangle teleporting her to the partition scene and left fans wondering what it might indicate. To know more, watch Ms Marvel episode five which releases on July 6.
