What is February 13th? Kiss Day of Valentine's week? Well, yeah, but the day before the most romantic day of the year is also "Galentine's Day". And it is equally fun and exciting as Valentine's Day. For women who are currently single, this is your day, girls! So, what exactly is Galentine's Day? It's a day dedicated to celebrating female friendship and sisterhood.
How did Galentine’s Day happen? We have actor Amy Poehler, who played Leslie Knope in the sitcom Parks and Recreation, to thank for this day. She coined the phrase during the show's second season in 2010. Leslie Knope was seen celebrating female friendship with her close friends and colleagues over a brunch of waffles and excessive gift-giving.
While there are numerous things that we could do with our girl gang, one of the most impromptu, easiest, and fun things to do is have a girl's night in and watch women-centric films! Here are a few Bollywood films that you can watch with your girl gang this Galentine’s Day.
Movies To Watch On Galentines Day
Pagglait
Starring Sanya Malhotra as Sandhya, who loses her husband within five months of marriage, the film deals with how our patriarchal society dictates a widow’s life. She is expected to follow the conventional standards set by society—to behave in a certain way, to grieve in a certain way, to live in a certain way— she is basically "instructed" to live her own life. The film also talks about the loveless relationships that we hold on to because, "Log kya kahenge?"
Mimi
Kriti Sanon starrer Mimi, talks about motherhood, surrogacy, adoption, and humanity. Mimi (Kriti Salon) is a small-town dancer who aspires to become an actor in Bollywood. To make money, she agrees to be a surrogate mother to an American couple. But when things don’t go as planned, Mimi, with the support of her friends and family, turns into an independent, compassionate, and bold woman.
Tribhanga
Tribhanga revolves around the dysfunctional family of Anuradha Apte (Kajol), her mother Nayanthara Apte, and her daughter Masha (Mithila Palkar). The three women, belonging to three different generations, share an estranged relationship, but love binds them together despite their differences. The story also explores how patriarchal societies label women for everything they do.
Sherni
Sherni not only deals with a female forest officer who is tasked with restoring balance between man and wildlife. It features Vidya Balan, who plays Vidya Vincent, a forest officer who is underestimated and patronised for being in a male-dominated profession. However, she remains undeterred and does not let criticism limit her. She is strong-willed and will do the right thing in the right way regardless of who supports her and who doesn’t.
A Thursday
Yami Gupta starrer Naina Jaiswal is introduced as an unsuspecting preschool teacher who lives a happy and simple life with her boyfriend. In the flick of a switch, Naina Jaiswal turns into a fearless woman who is holding 16 kids from her preschool hostage and demanding that her needs be met by the government. The powerful emotional scenes and address of a resonant social issue that resonates with many women globally make it an intriguing watch.
To women in romantic relationships, yes, Valentine’s Day is important, and it’s imperative that you enjoy it with your partner. But so is Galentine’s Day! Girlfriends are super important in our lives.
