From Gehraiyaan To Jalsa, Here Are 2022's Most-Watched Hindi Films On OTT

From Alia Bhatt's Gangubai Kathiawadi to The Kashmir Files, very few Bollywood films have performed well at the box office so far this year. The reasons could be many- lack of appealing and engaging content on the industry's part or the audience's reluctance to step into the theatres due to COVID-19. However, there are many films that performed well on OTT, amassing viewership worth talking about. But with so many films released every month, how do we know what the viewers loved to watch?

Ormax Media recently released its list of most-watched Hindi films of 2022, based on the overall content strength, marketing buzz and viewership of the Hindi films. The research firm restricted the samples to India so that foreign streaming of the Indian content do not affect the outcome. This research also do not use the figures provided by the streaming services. One view was counted after a user completed 30 minutes of the film and one episode of a TV series. Multiple users watching through the same account were also counted separately.

Here are the most-watched Hindi films on OTT of 2022 so far which made it to the most-watched list:

A Thursday

A Thursday tops the list of the most-watched Hindi film in 2022 so far with 25.5 million views. The film had a direct OTT release on Disney+ Hotstar on February 17, 2022. A Thursday is the story of a pre-school teacher Naina Jaiswal who takes 16 children as hostages with a peculiar demand of speaking with the Prime Minister of India. The film features actors stars Yami Gautam, Atul Kulkarni, Neha Dhupia, Dimple Kapadia and Karanvir Sharma in major roles.

Deepika Padukone-starrer Gehraiyaan stood second in the list with 22.3 million views. The movie follows the story of Alisha, a 30-year-old Yoga instructor, who goes on to have an affair with her cousin's fiancé and how it ends up disrupting four lives. Apart from Padukone, the film features Ananya Panday, Siddhant Chaturvedi and Dhairya Karwa. While the actors were celebrated for their fine acting in the film along with its music and cinematography, the film's screenplay was criticised.

3. Kaun Pravin Tambe?

Starring Shreyas Talpade as the lead, Kaun Pravin Tambe? stands third on the most-watched Hindi films list with 20.2 million views. The film premiered on Disney+ Hotstar on April 1, 2022. The film is a sports biographical drama based on the life of Indian cricketer Pravin Tambe who made his IPL debut at the age of 41 becoming the oldest debutante ever.

4. Jalsa

Jalsa falls on the fourth spot with 13.9 million views. The film premiered on Amazon Prime Video on March 18, 2022. It follows the thrilling story of a hit-and-run case where the maid of a successful journalist loses her daughter and seeks justice for the same. The film is directed by Suresh Triveni and features Vidya Balan and Shefali Shah in the lead roles.

5. Sharmaji Namkeen

With an estimate of 12.7 million views, Sharmaji Namkeen is the fifth most-watched Hindi film in 2022 so far. It follows the story of a widower who gets an early retirement and is struggling to keep a routine. He later starts a catering business for kitty parties and also befriends a widowed boutique owner and the two formulate a bond. The film stars Rishi Kapoor posthumously with Paresh Rawal finishing his remaining scenes along with Juhi Chawla, Suhail Nayyar, Isha Talwar and others.
