First Transgender Actor To Win Golden Globes: MJ Rodriguez becomes the first transgender actor to win a Golden Globe award. The Pose actor created history by becoming the first transgender actor to win a Golden Globe. She won the award in the Best Television Actor (Female) category.
In the 79th edition of Golden Globes, which was a closed-door award function, the Pose actor created history by becoming the first transgender actor to win an award.
This is not the first time Rodriguez created history, she was even the first trans performer to earn an Emmy nomination in the lead acting categories.
"This is the door that is going to open the door for many more young talented individuals. They will see that it is more than possible. They will see that a young Black Latina girl from Newark New Jersey who had a dream, to change the minds others would with love. Love wins. To my young LGBTQAI babies, we are here. The door is now open now reach the stars." wrote Rodriguez on Instagram after her win.
Her win is a milestone even in Golden Globes history as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association that awards the Golden Globes has often been accused of diversity and ethics issues.
From Scarlett Johansson to Tom Cruise, many other actors have protested against the lack of diversity among the Global Globes body, due to which the show was snubbed on a large scale.
The actor wins the Golden Globe over Uzo Aduba of In Treatment, Elisabeth Moss of The Handmaid’s Tale, Jennifer Aniston of The Morning Show and Christine Baranski of The Good Fight.
The win also marked the first Golden Globe victory for the series in its three-season run, as the series, created by Steven Canals, Brad Falchuk and Ryan Murphy, debuted in 2018 and aired its finale last year.
'We’re all human beings, we all have different personalities … I think it takes a person not only like myself, but many who are like me, to constantly go against the grain and scratch the surface,' said Rodriguez.
Other winners of Golden Globes 2022 included Ariana DeBose, Rachel Zegler, Jean Smart, Sarah Snook, Jane Campion, Nicole Kidman, and Kate Winslet among others.
