Memes are a zeitgeist that opens a passage into the culture and news of the time, and in 2023, we could see a lot of these memes making a historic mark. Even on bad days, these memes were sure to have lightened your mood from time to time this year. So here's an ode to 10 such memes that went viral in 2023.
1. Bhupendra Jogi
A 2018 interview with a Bhopal man called Bhupendra Jogi resurfaced on social media this year. Just like a lot of other memes, the 'Bhupendra Jogi' meme too sprung out of the blue, cracking up people from across the country after several years.
Here's what happened in the hilarious interview: The reporter asked a man his name, to which he replied, "Bhupendra Jogi." The reporter then asked, "US me kaha kaha gaye hain aap?" (Where have you been in the US?) Jogi replies, "Bahut jagah gaya hoon mai." (I have been to many places.) Finally, when asked to name a few places he had visited, he misunderstood the question. The reporter said, "Naam batayein." (Name them), to which he replied with his name again, "Bhupendra Jogi."
Here's an example of one such meme.

2. Just Looking Like A Wow
Does this one even require an introduction? "So beautiful, so elegant, just looking like a wow" can be heard in its exact tone even when it isn't playing. For context, a Delhi-based woman, who also appeared on the reality show Bigg Boss as a guest since her popularity, went viral overnight thanks to her video describing the "wow" factor of a salwar suit.
3. Parineeti Chopra "I Don't Want To Marry A Politician EVER!"
Actor Parineeti Chopra's 2014 interview during Hasee Toh Phasee's promotions went viral this year after her marriage to MP Raghav Chadha. The reason? She had said, "I don't want to marry any politician ever," in the interview, with stress on the 'ever'.
Considering the irony in the statement, netizens started using her tone as a manifestation mantra, making memes saying, "I do not want to become rich EVER," and more such funny lines.
4. Moye Moye
This is a more recent meme trend, enjoying the nascent virality on everyone's social media. 'Moye Moye' has turned into a term that suggests a sad moment. The meme is complete with a Serbian song in the background, in which the words 'moye moye' translate to "nightmare". The song Džanum by Teya Dora has garnered 6.3 crore views on YouTube since it was released eight months ago.
5. Barbenheimer
Barbenheimer means Barbie (2023) plus Oppenheimer (2023), the year's most iconic blockbuster battle. Both movies with polarising aesthetics were released on the same day in July, giving rise to an online debate about which of the two would be more successful.
Netizens who remained neutral or supported both movies introduced the 'Barbenheimer' memes, combining the aesthetics and iconic scenes from both to create memes. Notably, both movies were a grand success, making historic achievements in the cinema landscape worldwide.
6. Canon Event
Another meme emerged from a hit film from the year. The 'canon event' meme means "what is meant to happen will happen," or an event that is written in fate. This meme came about from a scene in Across the Spider-Verse, and netizens started using it as a way to describe incidents that they did not wish to interfere in.
For example, here's a canon event meme.
7. Girl Math
According to the internet, regular math does not apply in the girl world. Netizens, including women themselves, claim that this trend pertains to the gender-specific mental numerics that a woman uses to justify unnecessary purchases. For example, buying a Rs 1000 dress for full price is expensive, but buying a similar (or the same, in most cases) dress that was brought down from Rs 1200 to Rs 1000 is justified.
8. Girl Dinner
Another trend of women self-inflicting stereotypes is the 'girl dinner' trend. Women are known to eat bizarre combinations of food, sometimes in concerningly small quantities. An example of a 'girl dinner' that was recently viral on social media is a woman's plate of a single toast topped with chopped-up grapes and mayonnaise. "This is all I could find. It's like a mini-charcuterie board," she was heard saying.
Let's hope such gendered memes that feed into stereotypes about people are left back in 2023.
9. Elvish Bhai Ke Aage Bol Sakta Hai Kya?
An Elvish Yadav fan's interview recently went viral, as the boy was heard saying, "Elvish bhai ke aage koi bol sakta he kya?" The fan's enthusiastic reaction not only became all the rage on the internet but also garnered the attention of the Bigg Boss contestant. Elvish Yadav recreated the video, mimicking the boy's funny tone.
10. Rashmika Mandanna Incoherent Animal Dialogue
The recently released film Animal has caught a lot of attention online for its star cast as well as its upsetting narratives. A scene from the film where lead actor Rashmika Mandanna is talking what sounds like gibberish through a clenched jaw has become a viral meme. Social media users are recreating the dialogue with their twist, adding funny lines to top it off.
