In Meenakshi Sundareshwar Malhotra is paired alongside Abhimanyu Dassani and they essay the role of a newly married South Indian couple. Dassani made his debut in Bollywood with Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota. The film is produced by Karan Johar.
Malhotra was last seen in the films like Ludo and Pagglait. The latter was a path-breaking film as it tried to dismantle the stigma attached to widowhood. Pagglait director Umesh Bist treated death as a trigger for women’s liberation. The title Pagglait translates to someone who is mad. The film also has a dailogue “Jab ladki log ko akal aati hai na, toh sab unhe pagglait hi kehte hain!” Read more about Pagglait here.
The film's trailer had received backlash after it's launch for stereotyping Tamilian culture, complete with Meenakshi portrayed to be a fan of Rajinikanth. However, the film's director Vivek Soni rubbished the claims, and shed light on the Rajinikanth reference, "I know there are a lot of great actors down south, like Ajith, Surya, Vijay, but for me personally, after MGR, there is no bigger superstar than Rajinikanth. He is my personal favourite, and that is the reason we chose Meenakshi to be a fan of Rajini sir as such.” He added, “Apart from that I don’t think there is any stereotyping in the film.”
