Meenakshi Sundareshwar film And Others About Marriage: Most of us get our ideas about marriage and romantic relationships from what they show in the movies.
The perfect proposal, the happily ever after and the tragic goodbyes. What remains unseen on the big screen are some things that lie in the middle of the two extremes. The daily struggles of marriage, the small yet big sacrifices spouses make for each other and how they solve conflicts without reaching the tragic end.
Luckily Hindi cinema has been able to capture some of the nuanced aspects of marriage. Here are five films that tried shedding light on marriage in a way that spoke to many of us:
Meenakshi Sundareshwar
This newly released film is about a married couple who happen to live in different cities. Both the husband and wife are dedicated to their individual purposes in life. While Meenakshi chooses to work in a small company aiming to make a difference, Sundareshwar moves to another city for a job as he doesn't want to join his family business. This obviously does not help their marriage and video calls and conversations over the phone do not make the distance easier to deal with. Will the relationship survive the test or will it end up in divorce?
Tumhari Sulu
Women handling the home front are left to deal with everything domestic on their own. While the husband goes out to get money, it is the homemaker wife who makes use of the resources at the house and makes it a home. Women get so busy handling the daily chores and taking care of everyone that they hardly have time to make their dreams come true. This Vidya Balan starrer movie is about a housewife who gets a chance to shine as a radio jockey. Her transition from the home front to the studio amounts to massive chaos and that is when her husband comes through. The couple with their small and big arguments, stolen moments of love and respect for each other depict how a married couple becomes a team.
Dum Laga K Haisha
This romantic comedy tells an out-of-the-box story of an arranged marriage couple. The relationship that started with the groom not really liking his wife because of her weight ends up becoming a rather endearing tale of a love that grew with time. The film has Ayushmann Khurrana and Bhumi Pednekar in lead roles and the film has been directed by Sharat Katariya. The film in a way questions the relevance of looks when it comes to a man looking for a bride.
Shubh Mangal Savdhaan
Taking a serious condition of erectile dysfunction into play, the film comments on our society which always blames a woman for anything that goes wrong in a relationship. Right after encountering the condition for the first time, the soon-to-be-married couple faces a setback as the male lead's insecurities start to flare up. The love that existed at first starts to get sidelined and their families also get involved in their private matter. With many hilarious events and dialogues, the film ends up giving one of the most important messages that we all should have more conversations about.
Shaadi Ke Side Effects
A happily married couple hits a rough patch after they find out they are going to have a baby. Especially the man feels a change in his behaviour as he is hardly invested in the marriage. He starts to land his foot on two boats when he gives his best at home with his wife and kid and then goes out to live the life actually enjoys. Then comes a third person and the relationship gets even harder to maintain. The film has Vidya Balan and Farhan Akhtar as main leads and it has been directed by Saket Chaudhary.
