Daniel Joseph Levy is an actor, writer, producer, and director. He is the son of famous actor Eugene Levy. His career began as a television co-host for MTV Canada’s show MTV Live. Levy appeared in Degrassi: The Next Generation (2001-2015) for a four-episode arc. His first movie appearance was the thriller Cyberstalker (2012) and he later appeared in Admission (2013), the comedy- drama. In 2013, Dan Levy and his father Eugene formed Not a Real Company Productions. Schitt’s Creek (2015-2020) is Not a Real Company Productions’ first television series.
Levy stars in Schitt’s Creek and is also the co-creator, showrunner, executive producer, and writer of the show. In 2020, the final season of Schitt’s Creek won all seven Primetime Emmy Awards for comedy. It also became the first comedy or drama to sweep all acting awards in the genre. Schitt’s Creek set a new record for most single wins in a single season for a comedy series. Levy is also the only person to win Emmys for acting, directing, writing, and producing in a single year.
In 2020, Dan Levy stated that he is gay in an interview with Andy Cohen. His character David Rose in Schitt’s Creek is pansexual and the show has been applauded for their representation of queer characters and romance. After a same-sex kiss from Schitt's Creek was censored by Comedy Central India, Levy called out the television channel on Twitter.
"You showed the kiss between two women, you showed the kiss between a woman and a man, then removed the kiss between two men? This is a show about the power of inclusivity. The censorship of gay intimacy is making a harmful statement against that message. #loveislove" -dan levy (@danjlevy) October 6, 2020
Levy starred alongside Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis in the queer romantic-comedy Happiest Season (2020). It was nominated for the 2021 GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Film (Wide Release).
On February 6, 2021, Levy hosted an episode of Saturday Night Live with Phoebe Bridgers as the musical guest. Levy was also featured in M&M’S Super Bowl “Come Together” advertisement that aired on February 7, 2021.
