The world returned to normal in 2022 after two dull years due to COVID-19, and the year was jam-packed with exciting events. Everybody is prepared to ring in the new year of 2023 with fresh aspirations. It is, however, impossible to do so without going back to the events that generated the most media attention this year. Given the boycott trends, the controversies surrounding movie posters, and the criticisms of actor statements, it is safe to say that 2022 was not the best year for Bollywood.

Biggest 2022 Bollywood Controversies:

Kaali Poster

Leena Manimekalai, an Indian filmmaker, shared a poster for her film Kaali, which caused a lot of controversy. The depiction of Goddess Kaali smoking a cigarette in this poster offended people's sensibilities. In addition to smoking, the poster showed the star portraying Kali Maa holding a Trishul in one hand and the LGBTQ pride flag in the other. Many claimed that the Hindu deity was being disrespected and called for the filmmaker to face harsh punishment. After the uproar, the filmmaker was the target of numerous FIRs, but she stood her ground.

Brahmastra Part One: Shiva

Brahmastra, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, had also drawn criticism for the actor's appearance in the trailer as he enters the temple while wearing shoes. Many people objected to this and called for a boycott. According to director Ayan Mukerji, who later clarified this, Kapoor entered a Durga Pandal, not a temple. On the other hand, a lot of people disagreed with Kapoor's earlier remarks about enjoying beef, which infuriated the Hindu community. The actor also received criticism for body-shaming his pregnant spouse, Alia Bhatt.

The Kashmir Files- IFFI Row

At the recent International Film Festival of India in Goa, a screening of The Kashmir Files was presented. However, when Nadav Lapid, the head of the jury, addressed the audience during the IFFI closing ceremony, he referred to the movie as "propaganda, vulgar." Many people chastised him after that, including the director, Vivek Agnihotri, who tasked Nadav with proving how the film is inaccurate.

Laal Singh Chaddha

This list also includes Laal Singh Chaddha, the movie starring Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan. Even before the movie was released, there was a trend to "boycott" it. Aamir Khan was charged with insulting the Indian Army and offending their feelings. Additionally, Sanatan Rakshak Sena members of the Hindu community staged a protest in Uttar Pradesh against the movie. They pushed for the nationwide ban of Aamir's Laal Singh Chaddha. Members of the organisation claimed that the actor offended their religious sensibilities.

Ranveer Singh Nude Photoshoot

After posing naked for a magazine photoshoot earlier this year, Ranveer Singh became involved in a controversy. Following that, he was the subject of a FIR. The FIR was filed by the Mumbai Police under a number of Indian Penal Code Sections, including 292 (sale of obscene books, etc.), 293 (sale of obscene objects to young people), 509 (word, gesture, or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), and provisions of the Information Technology Act.

Jacqueline Fernandez’s link to Conman Sukesh

Jacqueline Fernandez was named as an accused in a supplemental charge sheet that the ED submitted on August 17, 2022, in the Rs 200 crore extortion case against conman Sukesh Chandrashekar in a Delhi court. The star has been at the centre of a persistent controversy ever since. Con artist Sukesh is currently in jail, while Fernandez is out on bail. Investigations are still ongoing in this case.
