Over the past few months, there has been an influx of thriller shows on OTT and viewers cannot get enough. Whether it be Madhuri Dixit in The Fame Game or Raveena Tandon in Aranayak, these shows have been led by women and showcased gory crimes pushing viewers to an edge and leaving them guessing what comes next.
The OTT space has been giving viewers a variety of content to choose from and one genre which has become popular with Indian viewers is crime-thriller. Whether it be a simple police investigation into a case or a missing celebrity, or a housewife becoming a drug lord, these shows have captured the attention of the audience.
Spanned over episodes, crime shows give each character chance to be explored, something that is usually not possible in feature films. Thrillers, despite being dark and often violent, also offer viewers interesting sub plots and binge-worthy content.

The Fame Game
Over the span of her career, Madhuri Dixit has played a variety of characters but this show sees her step into a familiar-yet-strange territory, with the role of a film star who goes missing. She plays the role of Anamika Anand, whose life is picture-perfect in public records but in shambles in actuality. Directed by Karishma Kohli and Bejoy Nambiar, the thriller also features Manav Kaul, Sanjay Kapoor, Suhasini Mulay, amongst others. It is an eight-episode long series is available on Netflix.
Rudra: The Edge Of Darkness
This show marks the debut of actor Ajay Devgn in the web series space. He plays the role of DCP Rudraveer Singh, who has solved the most number of cases as part of a special unit, although at the cost of his personal life. Rudra has been handed another high profile case but this time the accused is smarter and crueller. One of the characters challenges him and says that he only catches people who slip but what happens when they do not. The show is based on the British TV show Luther. It is directed by Rajesh Mapuskar and the cast includes Isha Deol and Raashii Khanna in the key roles. It can be watched on Disney+ Hotstar.
The Last Hour
This supernatural crime drama explores the story of a shaman who joins a cop to track down mysterious deaths in a hilly region. Police officer Arup, who is played by Sanjay Kapoor, is trying to crack the case of the death of a Bengali actor with the help of a shaman named Dev, played by Karma Takapa. What follows is a mesh of ancient practices that puts Arup's life, and that of his loved one, at risk. The Last Hour has been directed by Amit Kumar and Anupama Minz, and also features Shahana Goswami, Raima Sen, Shaylee Krishnen and Mandakini Goswami, amongst others.
Aarya Season 2
Directed by Ram Madhvani, the first season of the show marked Sushmita Sen's foray into the OTT format. The first season won a nomination for the International Emmy Awards. Aarya is actually based on a Dutch drama series Penoza and follows its lead character's journey into the world of the mafia. In season one, viewers are introduced to Aarya who is forced to take over her husband's drug empire after his untimely death, in order to keep her children safe. Season 2 marks Aarya's return to the drug world when the threat continues to loom over her children. Both the seasons of Aarya can be ">watched on Disney+ Hotstar.
Aranyak
The show is a small-town thriller that has a cop heading for a break, a missing child and a forest full of secrets at its core. Helmed by Vinay Waikul, it marked the OTT debut of film actor Raveena Tandon, who plays the lead character of Kasturi Dogra, a cop about hand over the charge as Station House Officer but changes her decision after a woman from another country files a complaint about her missing boyfriend and daughter. The cast also includes Parambrata Chatterjee, Ashutosh Rana and Meghna Malik. You can watch Aranyak on Netflix.
