31 Years Later ‘Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama’ Set For Nationwide Re-Release

One of the most romantic tales of the early 2000s is returning to theatres this September. Directed by Anubhav Sinha, Tum Bin, starring Priyanshu Chatterjee, Sandali Sinha, Himanshu Malik and Raqesh Bapat in lead roles, is re-releasing on PVR INOX screens on September 20.

The film follows the story of Shekhar Malhotra who accidentally kills Canadian-Indian businessman Amar Shah. To seek redemption, Shekhar decides to watch over Amar's company and take care of his family and friends. However, he falls in love with Amar's fiancé Piya.



Apart from this, the popular animated film Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama is finally ready to make its theatrical debut in India. The film will be released across India in Hindi, English, Tamil, and Telugu on October 18.

A Japanese-Indian animated film, Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama depicts the story of Ramayana. The film was originally released in 1992 and was co-directed by Japan's Koichi Sasaki and India's Ram Mohan. The movie was planned and produced by Yugo Sako. However, it faced controversies in India, with religious groups concerned about how the epic was portrayed by foreign filmmakers. Despite this, the film gained a cult status over the years and remains an important animated interpretation of the Ramayana.

It is being distributed across India by Geek Pictures India, AA Films, and Excel Entertainment.

Anurag Kashyap has announced the re-release of his iconic Gangs of Wasseypur, set to hit cinemas from August 30 to September 5. The crime comedy, featuring Manoj Bajpayee, Huma Qureshi, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, will return to the big screen with tickets priced at Rs 149. 

Gangs of Wasseypur, first released in 2012, is widely regarded as a cultural milestone in Indian cinema. The film’s gritty depiction of the coal mafia in Dhanbad and its unforgettable characters and dialogues have made it a cult classic. Anurag  Kashyap shared the exciting news on Instagram, writing, “In three days, the Gang will be back again. GOW back in cinemas.”

Moreover, the 2001 romantic classic Rehnaa Hai Tere Dil Mein will also make its way back to theatres on the same day, August 30th. This special re-release by Pooja Entertainment promises to reignite the magic of the film that has captivated Bollywood fans for over twenty years.

Rehnaa Hai Tere Dil Mein To Re-Release In Theatres

Starring Dia Mirza, R. Madhavan, and Saif Ali Khan, Rehnaa Hai Tere Dil Mein quickly became a cult favourite, endearing itself to millennial audiences with its heartfelt story. Moreover, the soundtrack of Rehnaa Hai Tere Dil Mein is a standout aspect of the film, with its romantic melodies continuing to enchant audiences. 

Before Rehnaa Hai Tere Dil Mein, Maine Pyaar Kiya made a return to theatres this August 2024, followed by the re-release of Laila Majnu, featuring Triptii Dimri and Avinash Tiwary in July. Both films attracted significant audiences, eager to relive the cinematic magic.

8 Recent Films Back on the Big Screen

1. Maine Pyaar Kiya

Maine Pyaar Kiya made grand re-release on August 23, marking its 35th anniversary. The iconic film, celebrated for the unforgettable chemistry between Salman Khan and Bhagyashree and its hit songs, is ready to captivate audiences anew. 

Rajshri Productions announced the re-release through a post on their official Instagram, featuring a collage of the lead pair. The post read, "It's time to relive their 'Pyar Bhari Dosti' as #MainePyarKiya re-releases on August 23, 2024, in selected PVRINOX Pictures and Cinepolis India theatres."

2. Laila Majnu 

Imtiaz Ali took to Instagram to share his enthusiasm and some behind-the-scenes moments from the films he wrote. "With love for Kashmir, Laila Majnu releases at @inoxsrinagar on the 2nd of August. 3. Rockstar

Imtiaz Ali's Rockstar, featuring Ranbir Kapoor and Nargis Fakhri, has garnered a cult following since its original release in 2011. Although the movie was initially deemed a semi-hit with net India collections just shy of Rs 70 crores and a worldwide gross of approximately Rs 109 crores, its re-release also made waves in theatres.

4. Lakshya

Hrithik Roshan starrer Lakshya, directed by Farhan Akhtar and featuring Preity Zinta, Amitabh Bachchan, and Amrish Puri, marks its 20th anniversary this year. The film, which remains significant even two decades later, re-released in theatres on June 21. 

5. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, originally hit screens in 2013 under the direction of Ayan Mukerji. It received favourable reviews from critics and strong word-of-mouth upon its release. The film concluded its theatrical journey in India with a total box office collection of 190.03 crore rupees net.

Over the years, YJHD has amassed a dedicated fan base, evident during its run during Valentine’s Week. According to a report by Sacnilk, the film grossed 28.14 lakh rupees at the Indian box office from February 9th to 15th, 2024, with ticket sales totaling 21,567.

6. Jab We Met

Jab We Met, starring Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan, first hit theatres in 2007 to critical acclaim and audience praise. During its initial release, the film earned approximately 32 crore rupees net, marking it as a box office hit.

Regarded as one of Imtiaz Ali's finest works, Jab We Met has attained modern-day cult status in Bollywood, continuing to resonate with viewers. In its recent rerun from February 9th to 15th 2024, the film grossed 27.83 lakh rupees and sold 20,619 tickets nationwide.

7. Manthan

Shyam Benegal’s acclaimed 1976 film Manthan holds a special place in the hearts of its audience. Starring Smita Patil and Naseeruddin Shah, it made history as India’s first crowd-funded movie, financed by 500,000 farmers who each contributed Rs. 2. Recently, the restored version of Manthan premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival and received widespread acclaim.

The Film Heritage Foundation, responsible for the restoration, announced that this 48-year-old classic will be re-screened across India in 50 cities and over 100 theatres on June 1 and 2, 2024.

8. Dil To Pagal Hai

Shah Rukh Khan's three blockbusters, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Dil To Pagal Hai, and Chak De India, were re-released in theatres in January this year. The production house behind these iconic films announced the Nostalgia Film Festival, which took place at PVR and INOX Cinema chains from January 19 to January 22.

This weekend festival offered audiences a chance to relive the magic of these timeless classics on the big screen. Notably, ticket prices started as low as Rs. 112, making it an affordable and enchanting outing for movie enthusiasts.

Looking ahead, Cinepolis is reportedly preparing to organise a retro film festival featuring three 1990s classics: Main Khiladi Tu Anari, Khiladi, and Baazigar. Furthermore, plans are underway for an Oscar film festival scheduled for March to highlight Oscar-nominated films, while an annual 3D film festival aims to promote special formats like 3D movies.
