In the inaugural episode of Koffee With Karan Season 8, Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh made their first joint appearance on a talk show as a couple. The episode was notable, featuring engaging conversation and some surprising revelations on the Koffee couch.

The Proposal

Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh's romantic journey began in 2012 while working on the film Ram Leela, culminating in their marriage in 2018. However, on the Koffee With Karan show, Ranveer disclosed an intriguing detail – the couple had actually been engaged in secret for three years before their wedding. This revelation left host Karan Johar visibly surprised, indicating that their covert engagement had been a well-kept secret. Singh stated, "I proposed in 2015, and we were quietly engaged for three years."

Deepika Padukone's Battle With Anxiety, And Singh's Support For Her

Discussing Singh's support for her, Padukone mentioned how, during that time, Singh created a secure and welcoming environment for her to open up. He never dismissed her feelings by saying 'it's okay' or suggesting we go for a drive or anything of the sort. She added that back then, he may not have fully understood the situation, but he was fully present. He displayed immense patience, which revealed a lot about his character."

Singh also shared his perspective on Padukone's mental health challenges and when he realised the seriousness of the situation. He recounted, "In 2014, while I was shooting, she called me and said, 'I've had a blackout and a fall. Can you come home?' I immediately hung up and rushed to her place on my bike. When I saw her, something wasn't right. She's in front; she's looking at you, but she's not all there." "One day at breakfast, she was sitting across from me, and she was just crying, and there were just tears. Copious tears are flowing down, "Singh added how feeling helpless he reached out to Deepika's parents for help.

How Proposal Ring Stretched Singh's Budget

Ranveer Singh's proposal to Padukone took place during a romantic getaway to the Maldives in 2015. Singh shared that he had purchased Padukone's engagement ring before their trip, despite it being a significant expense for him at that point. When Karan Johar inquired about the ring, Singh confirmed, saying, "Yes, sir. Beyond my resources at the time, perhaps, but even so, a very impressive one." He further mentioned that he had sought input from his sister and mother before making the purchase.

How Padukone’s Family Reacted To The Proposal

Following Singh's proposal, they headed to Bangalore to meet Padukone’s family. Surprisingly, Padukone’s family had no prior knowledge of her engagement to Ranveer. At a dinner with close family friends, when Padukone broke the news, it left her family visibly surprised.

While they received congratulations during the dinner, once back home, Deepika's mother, Ujjala, expressed her concerns to her daughter. She inquired, "Who is this guy? He's proposed marriage, and you've said yes  too."In fact, it took her several years to warm up to Ranveer, but he has since become one of her "favourite" individuals.

When Ranveer Singh Was 'Underconfident'

Ranveer Singh has significantly dialled back his extravagant fashion choices, partly influenced by advice from his wife Padukone. Padukone once remarked that Singh appeared extremely confident but was actually lacking in self-confidence. She suggested that he should avoid diverting attention away from his true self with his flashy attire. Singh himself acknowledged that he didn't want his flamboyant fashion sense to overshadow his true identity as a person.
