While the trailer introduced Ryan Gosling as "just Ken," he seems to have delighted the audience, finally making the world understand the role of Ken more than being a sidekick.
The character actor Ryan Gosling plays Ken in the film Barbie, a sidekick to Stereotypical Barbie Margot Robbie has won the hearts of the audience with his Ken-energy. Gosling did not just give his all into the role with that blonde hair, fake tan, and neon roller blades with comic relief, but seemed to have done more to win everyone's heart as the internet hoots for him to be nominated for Oscars for the role.
Not Margot Barbie, But Ken Is Making Oscar Noise
As the La La Land star earlier said, "I was born for this role." Talking about his character Ken, what made him shine brighter than Barbie herself when "she's everything and he's just a Ken"?
As we get into the Barbie world everything seems to be perfect unless it is not. But Gosling's supporting actor was! As a review read "Every muscle flex, every hair flick, every guitar strum lands perfectly. There are moments where he will rob you of breath." But how????
Not just the great writing of the Frances Ha duo Gerwig and Noah Bauchman add wonders to his screen time, but Ryan Gosling let Ken absorb him fully from the amazing dance numbers to the soulful musical monologue, it was Ryan adding glitter into Ken. From extremely punny comic relief to his journey of learning and unlearning, Ryan proved why Ken is a dream boy and a Barbie Beau.
From the plot twist landing Stereotypical Ken and Barbie from Barbie Land to the real world, it is a self-discovery journey of Barbie and Ken is just a subservient sidekick. Bewitched by Barbie's spotlight and real-world incels injecting envy into Ken's mind, the beloved sweet beau turns into a rogue. From turning into a semi-villain to realising he's not "just a Ken", Ken's learning and unlearning journey teaches him and us all the purpose of Ken and how to truly be a man, Ryan Gosling put himself out there getting under the skin of all shades of Ken bringing out the best in him and proving his statement right that he was born for this role!
As the internet is flooded with sugar-candied words for Gosling's performance, claiming that he deserves to be kept in the Oscar nomination for this role, is it a fancy demand by the enamoured audience or can he actually win the award? While Gosling has been nominated for the Oscars twice, history suggests that the Oscars are snatched up by more emotionally intriguing roles than just supporting comic relief. Moreover, some great releases by Timothee Chalamet and Joaquin Phoenix stand in the lineup for this year's highly anticipated films; will Gosling be able to outshine these intriguing characters just by being Ken? We will find out!
I went to the film for Gerwig, but I would say I will go back to the film just for Gosling! The film is on big screens from July 21, and you must not miss the fancy land for an emotionally introspective turmoil with a wholesome hug.
