Days before its release, Akshay Kumar's upcoming film Raksha Bandhan is facing troubled waters on social media. The film has run into a row after its writer Kanika Dhillon's allegedly Hinduphobic tweets surfaced online. Several old tweets of the writer have gone viral on social media with a few netizens claiming that Dhillon has repeatedly attacked Hindu beliefs and religious sentiments. This has led to Twitterati demanding a boycott of the film and using tags such as #BoycottRakshaBandhan.
Directed by Aanand L Rai and co-written by Himanshu Sharma, Raksha Bandhan is the story of the relationship between siblings. Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar play key roles in the film with Sahejmeen Kaur, Deepika Khanna, Sadia Khateeb, and Smrithi Srikanth as supporting cast members. The film is set on release on 11 August.
Kanika Dhillon trolled
Dhillon's previous tweets on CAA protests have left many irked triggering a massive controversy on social media. After her controversial tweets on gaumutra, Hijab ban, and communal lynching resurfaced, netizens have been calling for a boycott of the Akshay Kumar family drama.

Meanwhile, a section of netizens has also dug up Kumar's old interviews where he is heard talking about people wasting milk whilst offering it to Lord Shiva. An old tweet of him wishing actor Anupam Kher on his birthday which happened to have fallen on the same day as Mahashivratri is also doing the rounds on social media. In it too, Kumar suggests the veteran star to not waste milk by offering it to the Lord but use it by donating it to someone.
Aamir Khan's Laal Singh Chaddha too courts controversy
Clashing at the box office with Raksha Bandhan, Aamir Khan's Laal Singh Chaddha too has been facing backlash the past few days.
The posts calling for a boycott of the film recalled a controversy from 2015 when Khan had said he was alarmed by the incidents of growing “intolerance” in India and that his then-wife Kiran Rao had suggested they should probably leave the country. Since then, the actor has been careful not to make a single controversial statement.
While responding to a trending Twitter hashtag that is calling for the boycott of his upcoming film Laal Singh Chaddha, Khan said, “Please don’t boycott my films, please watch them. I really love the country… That’s how I am. It is rather unfortunate if some people feel that way. I want to assure everyone that it’s not the case so please don’t boycott my films, please watch them,” he added.
