Kangana Ranaut, who is awaiting the release of her film Emergency, was recently questioned about the sale of her controversial Mumbai property, which was partially demolished by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in 2020.
Kangana Opens Up About Selling Bandra Office
Reports earlier this month suggested that Kangana had sold the multi-storey property in Bandra's Pali Hill area for ₹32 crore. When asked about the sale, Kangana hinted that she had to decide due to financial constraints caused by the delay in Emergency’s release.
The property also served as the office for her production company, Manikarnika Films. When asked about the sale, Kangana responded by telling the interviewer they were asking her "personal questions." She explained, "Naturally, this was my film that was up for a release, so I had my personal property on stake, and now it has not been released... Well, you use your property at such times only. Like, if you are ever facing bad times, you can sell it. Now you are asking me to offer an explanation for that too."
Kangana's film Emergency, which was initially set to release on September 6, is facing delay due to ongoing controversies and certification issues. The movie, in which Kangana portrays former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, has faced backlash from certain groups and has yet to receive clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
Has Kangana's Emergency Been Approved By CBFC?
Now the latest development is that the film has been reportedly granted a U/A certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) with a few modifications. The board has mandated some edits and the inclusion of disclaimers for certain scenes in the film.
According to India Today, "CBFC has requested filmmakers to include disclaimers regarding the historical events portrayed in the movie." Despite this clearance, the film's release date remains undetermined. The U/A certificate means the film is suitable for viewers of various ages, provided they are accompanied by a guardian. The film was initially submitted for review to the CBFC on July 8, as reported by several reports.
On Friday, September 6, Kangana took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to inform her fans about the postponement. In her post, she expressed gratitude for her fans' understanding, stating, "With a heavy heart, I announce that my directorial Emergency has been postponed. We are still waiting for certification from the censor board, and a new release date will be announced soon."

5 Developments So Far
1. While there were earlier reports suggesting that the film had received clearance from the CBFC, Kangana clarified that the certification is currently on hold. The delay stems from objections raised by various groups, particularly Sikh organisations. The movie has been criticised for its portrayal of certain historical events, including the assassination of Indira Gandhi and the Punjab riots.
2. Kangana revealed that her film is facing pressure to remove certain scenes, adding, "There is pressure on us to remove scenes such as the assassination of Indira Gandhi and the Punjab riots. It’s hard to believe this is happening, and I apologise for the current situation."
3. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), a prominent Sikh religious body, has sent a legal notice to the film's producers, alleging that Emergency misrepresents Sikhs and distorts historical facts. They have requested a ban on the movie, stating that its content hurts the sentiments of the Sikh community.
4. SGPC General Secretary Gurcharan Singh Grewal told ANI, "It is good that the censor board has halted the release. The concerns raised involve not only the Sikh community but also national harmony."
5. According to reports, the Indian government is taking the concerns seriously, with some religious organisations raising alarms over sensitive content in the film. A government official commented, "Religious sentiments cannot be hurt, and there are some sensitive parts in the movie. The Centre is closely examining the issue."
What’s Next for Emergency?
As of now, the release date for Emergency remains uncertain. Kangana has assured fans that the team is working to resolve the issues and that an official update will be shared soon.
