Kangana Ranaut as Indira Gandhi: As revealed by the Manikarnika actor's Instagram stories on June 23, Ranaut is set to play the role of India's first female Prime Minister in the movie Emergency which will be based on Gandhi's life and the emergency period of 1975 to 1977.
Amidst preparations for Thalaivi release, Ranaut revealed her upcoming project Emergency. Taking to her Instagram account, she wrote, "Body scans for film Emergency, time to get in Madam Prime Minister Indira Gandhi Ji's skin".
The film will not be a biopic but will cover significant moments of Indian political history including Operation Blue Star and The Emergency, according to a report by Indian Express.

Ranaut said in a statement, "To be precise, it is a political drama that will help my generation to understand the socio-political landscape of current India."
The actor added that she is truly looking forward to playing Gandhi's character in the movie and called her "the most iconic leader that we have had in the history of Indian politics".
She further revealed that many significant actors are yet to join the real-life based movie, they will be stepping into the shoes of notable political leaders like Sanjay Gandhi, Morarji Desai, Rajeev Gandhi, and Lal Bahadur Shastri, among others.
According to a report by Pinkvilla, apart from playing the lead role, Ranaut will be directing the film too. Regarding the same, she said, "I was very eager to bring it to screen," she added, "I am very happy to be the director of this film. Looking forward to bringing the iconic story to the silver screen."
Emergency will be the second directorial of Ranaut after Manikarnika, however, she reportedly wanted another film to be her second directorial.
While Ranaut is currently awaiting the release of Thalaivi, a biopic of the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, she has recently wrapped up Sarvesh Mewara’s Tejas and Razneesh Ghai’s Dhaakad. She is also set for her second outing in the Manikarnika franchise, titled Manikarnika Returns: The Legend Of Didda.
