The New Zealand director, Jane Campion, made history as she became the first woman to be nominated twice for Best Director Oscars in 2022. She was first nominated for her 1993 film The Piano and she is nominated for the 2022 Oscars for her film The Power Of The Dog.
Interestingly, this time, too, she will be competing with the same director as she was in 1993, i.e., Steven Spielberg. Steven was nominated for Best Director for Schindler's List in 1993 along with Jane which he succeeded in bagging the award and is again nominated in the category in Oscars 2022. Jane's achievement is another milestone in the history of women and Oscars as it was the first time that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominated the same female director twice for Best Director Oscars.
Jane Campion Becomes The Only Female To Be Nominated Twice For Best Director Oscars
Jane is also nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay Oscars in 2022 and in 1991 she won Best Original Screenplay for The Piano. She was also nominated for Best Picture Oscars for The Power Of The Dog as its producer along with the Best Director for the same film. The Power Of The Dog is one of the great films by Campion who has been able to grab many awards up until now.
The 2021 Netflix film The Power Of The Dog was highly praised for its direction and story along with a great cast including Benedict Cumberbatch, Jesse Plemons, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Kirsten Dunst. The film received a total of 11 Oscar nominations in 2022 including Best Actor, Best Original Score, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor and Best Sound leading the nominations this year.
The nomination women directors has always been low at the Oscars. The example is the Best Director nominations in the 94 year history of the awards. Till date only seven female directors to receive nominations for Best Director Oscars, namely Sofia Coppola, Jane Campion, Kathryn Bigelow, Greta Gerwig, Chloe Zhao Lina Wertmuller and Emerald Fennel. And only two female wins have been witnesses till date in the category, namely Kathryn Bigelow in 2009 and Chloe Zhao in 2021.
