Indian women Filmmakers, in the male-dominated entertainment business, have set their feet and are marching ahead. The film industry in recent years has promoted female talent, especially those behind the cameras. Be it the Hindi cinema industry, regional film industry or Hollywood, there are many women directors who are successful and have a great filmography.
The female filmmakers in the Indian cinema industry are breaking glass ceilings by making masterpieces. And some of the women who have delivered absolute gems of films will hit the screens again with their films in 2022-2023.
Here's a list of Indian Women Filmmakers whose films you should definitely look out for!
Ashima Chibber
Ashima Chibber is a film director and screenwriter who has primarily worked in Bollywood. Chibber directed Mere Dad Ki Maruti starring Saqib Saleem, Ram Kapoor, and Prabal Panjabi. It was released in 2013. Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway, her next project, is set to hit theatres on May 20, 2022. It is believed to be based on a true story about a mother who fights for her children against an entire country. In the film, Rani Mukerji plays the lead role.
Zoya Akhtar
Akhtar has directed films like Luck by Chance (2009), Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011) among others and she is all set for another release. Netflix had announced in November 2021 that Akhtar, who started the production banner Tiger Baby Films with Reema Kagti, will be directing a live-action feature film, an adaptation of The Archies. In the film, Agastya Nanda, Khushi Kapoor, and Suhana Khan, three of Bollywood's most popular star kids, will play Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper, and Veronica Lodge, respectively. The film is expected to release in 2023. She has two other releases in 2023: Kho Gaye Hum Kahan and Jee Le Zaraa
Anubhuti Kashyap
Kashyap's directorial debut was Afsos, a film starring Gulshan Devaiah which was released on the OTT Platform. Having worked with her brother Anurag Kashyap on his film DevD and Gangs of Wassaypur as an assistant director. Her next flick Doctor G starring Ayushmann Khurrana is a campus comedy-drama in which the actor will play a doctor. Khurrana announced the film on his social media in December 2020. The film is all set to release in June 2022.

Meghna Gulzar
Gulzar is a writer, director and producer who has helmed films like Talvar, Raazi and Chhapaak. Her next directorial venture is the biopic on Chief of Army Staff during the Indo-Pakistan war, Sam Manekshaw. He was the first Indian Army Commander to be promoted to the rank of field marshal. The biopic titled Sam Bahadur will feature Vicky Kaushal in the lead role and is set to release in 2023.
Gayathri
Pushkar and Gayathri are Indian husband and wife filmmaker-duo. They are Asia's first married couple who are directors. They've directed films like Oram Po and Va-Quarter Cutting in Tamil. Their next project will be a Hindi-language neo-noir action-thriller film, Vikram Vedha. Saif Ali Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Radhika Apte, Rohit Saraf, and Yogita Bihani will appear in the film. It's a remake of a 2017 Tamil film of the same name. The Hindi remake is expected to hit the theatres on September 30, 2022.
Kiran Rao
The film producer, screenwriter and director debuted with her film Dhobi Ghat in 2011. Rao is now working on her second feature film which has been provisionally titled 2 Brides. The film will be reportedly completed by year-end and be released in 2023.
