Kajol’s much-awaited The Trial, Pyaar Kaanoon, Dhokha, an adaptation of Robert King and Michelle King’s The Good Wife, an American courtroom drama series, is out on Disney+ Hotstar. Helmed by Suparn Verma, the series is produced by Banijay Asia and Ajay Dvgan Films.

The plot revolves around a homemaker and former lawyer who returns to the workforce after 10 years. She begins working at a law firm to support her family after her husband is imprisoned in the wake of a sex scandal. The biggest strength of the Hindi remake is said to be Kajol’s exceptional and captivating performance.

Indian Series Remade From Foreign Shows

For those who have already binged on the eight-episode series, here are five other Indian shows adapted from foreign shows to watch over the weekend.

Aarya

Sushmita Sen’s Aarya, which is awaiting the release of its third season, is one of the most loved web series in recent times. It’s based on Pieter Bart Korthuis’s Dutch crime series, Penoza.  Created by Ram Madhvani, Aarya features the story of how the life of a loving mother and wife turns upside down upon the unfortunate murder of her husband. Initially naïve, Aarya has no other option but to hone her skills in the illegal business that her family is neck deep into to safeguard her children. The series traces her journey from that of a simple homemaker to that of a mafia queen while taking care of her three children.

The Night Manager

The Night Manager is a crime thriller by Sandeep Modi and a remake of the British series of the same name. The original was based on the novel of the same name by John Le Carre. Starring Anil Kapoor, Aditya Roy Kapur, Shobita Dhulipala, and Tillotama Shome in the lead roles, the series follows the life of hotel Night Manager Shaan Sengupta, who was a former Lieutenant in the Indian Navy. In order to avenge the death of a young girl, Shaan takes up the offer to play the role of a double agent with the most wanted gangster, Shelly Rungta. The rest of the story is about how Shaan manages to take Shelly down from the inside.

Rana Naidu

The Rana Daggubati and Venkatesh Daggubati starrer Rana Naidu was created by Karan Anshuman and Suparn Verma. The series is an adaptation of the American crime drama Ray Donovan. Rana Naidu, aka Fixer of the Stars, makes a living by fixing the messes left by his celebrity clients. He is married with two children but seems to have a tough time establishing a relationship with them owing to his own past. His father, Naga Naidu, gets released from prison earlier than expected and wants to mend his broken relationship with his son. The story basically revolves around the complicated relationship between the father-son duo.

Class

Adapted from the Spanish hit series Elite, Class revolves around the lives of three middle-class students who are offered a scholarship programme at an elite private school after their local school is destroyed in a fire. Initially, the students felt left out because of their social and economic differences. The story revolves around how their lives intertwine because, despite their seemingly different lifestyles, they do have common ground on which to bond. Much like the original version, the series explores various social issues faced by adolescents, including homophobia, economic inequality, casteism, child neglect, discrimination, etc.

Criminal Justice

Based on a British Television series of the same name, Criminal Justice is a crime thriller and legal drama. The first season of the Indian version narrates the story of a young man who is wrongly accused of murder; the second features the life of a woman who is facing trial for murdering her husband; and the third season revolves around the murder of a celebrity. Criminal Justice follows the professional and personal life of Madhav Mishra (Pankaj Tripathi), an advocate who deals with all these cases.
