2022 has been year of women-be it sports or films. This year many films having strong women characters released, also written and directed by women. We have seen some of the best films to date with strong female characters that have left an impression on audiences.
Many blockbuster pan-Indian movies fell short of what producers, actors, and directors had hoped they would do in terms of captivating audiences. However, this year was the one where we saw female characters in every genre—from dramas to adventures to suspense to horror films. A few of these characters won over fans' affection and helped the movie become a box office success. Alia Bhatt, Gangubai Kathiwadi
Gangubai Kathiawadi, a film by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is loosely based on a true story from Hussain Zaidi and Jane Borges' book Mafia Queens of Mumbai. The movie follows the life of Gangubai (played by Alia Bhatt), a young woman from a wealthy family who is sold into prostitution and later rises to become a militant and Mumbai's "mafia queen." Bhatt exudes so much confidence, tenacity, and deeply engrained complexity when playing the title role.
Tabu, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2
The movie, which stars Tabu, Kartik Aaryan, and Kiara Advani, is a stand-alone sequel to Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007) and the second instalment in the Bhool Bhulaiyaa franchise. The setting is still a haunted haveli in Rajasthan where Manjulika, a Bengali woman's ghost, is imprisoned on the third floor and awaits the right time to exact her revenge. For everyone in the movie, Tabu's elegant performance in a dual role held the line.
Yami Gautam, A Thursday
In the movie A Thursday, Naina Jaiswal, a preschool teacher, kidnaps 16 children to fulfil an odd request to speak with the Indian Prime Minister. In addition to owning a gun, Yami Gautam's character Naina is a skilled shooter. Neha Dhupia's character, Catherine, who is pregnant, is in charge of the chaotic Mumbai police department. Gautam delivered a standout performance and carried the whole movie by herself.

Sai Pallavi, Gargi
Sai Pallavi portrays the title character in the Tamil courtroom drama Gargi. The life of Gargi, a teacher at a private school, is portrayed in the film. A nine-year-old girl is suddenly the target of sexual harassment in the apartment where her father works. After being detained by the police for his alleged involvement in the gangrape of a minor, the movie follows Gargi's battle to clear his father of suspicion. Sai Pallavi is the star of this show throughout. The actor shows how much potential she still has in what is undoubtedly her best performance of her career.
Vidya Balan Shefali Shah, Jalsa
The spotlight on Jalsa is on the lives of two women: Rukhsana, who served as her housekeeper, and Maya, a journalist known for speaking bravely and honestly. Rukhsana pursues justice after learning that her daughter was killed in a car accident one evening, which leads to a string of events involving politics, power, and money. Shefali Shah portrays Rukhsana in the film, and Vidya Balan plays Maya. Both actors delivered excellent performances.
Madhuri Dixit, Maja Ma
Pallavi, a devoted housewife and devoted mother played by Madhuri Dixit, is the main character of the story and is confronted with secrets from her past. Her acceptance of certain truths that are fundamental to her identity and personality, as well as how they impact the people close to her, are the main themes of the story. Every scene that Madhuri Dixit is in is captivating, and she portrays a strong character.
Bollywood has produced some excellent films with women in leading roles, as well as supporting roles. The audience anticipates seeing more films with the same diverse representation and sensibility.
