Thappad, Nikaah And Other Hindi Films That Dealt With The Subject Of Divorce

It’s not recent that Bollywood has discussed sensitive issues like infidelity, divorce or domestic violence in its films. It has been portraying complicated relationships in movies for a very long time and it is now that the audience has started to acknowledge them more clearly. Here are some Hindi films on divorce and complicated marriages.

Bollywood has been actively including films regarding sensitive issues like rape culture, LGBTQ representation and most recently, complicated relationships. It is not very recent that the Hindi-film industry started discussing these issues, rather it has made many movies depicting the plight of women, stigma around same-sex relationships and infidelity in marriages. However, the way how these issues had been discussed has surely changed for the better.

1. Nikaah

The movie came out in 1982 and discussed the life of a woman who breaks her unhappy marriage and falls in love with her college mate who offers her a job at his company. However, the events take a turn as her ex-husband tries to get back in her life and she must decide whom she loves more. Nikaah also discusses the Muslim marriage laws regarding remarriage and divorce. It features actors Raj Babbar, Deepak Parashar and Salma Agha in the lead and is directed by B.R. Chopra.

2. We Are Family

Divorced Maya lives with her three children whom she loves the most. However, when her ex-husband Aman decides to introduce his girlfriend Shreya to his family, she is reluctant to accept her. Maya tries to mend her relationship with her after a fateful revelation. The movie stars Kajol, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Arjun Rampal. It is directed by Sidharth Malhotra.

3. Neerja

The movie doesn’t revolve around divorce but it does mention an abusive marriage which compels Neerja Bhanot to break ties with her abusive husband and become independent. Neerja is a biographical film discussing the life and the tragic events that caused the death of flight attendant Neerja Bhanot. She is a survivor of domestic abuse who has learned to stand up for herself. The film stars Sonam Kapoor, Shabana Azmi and Jim Sarbh among others.

4. De De Pyaar De

Starring Ajay Devgn, Rakul Preet Singh and Tabu, the film revolves around an NRI businessman who lives in London separated from his wife. He falls in love with a young girl, half his age and decides to marry her with the blessing of his family. However, his wife and children refuse to approve of his lover who is the same age as his children. The film is directed by Akiv Ali.

5. Thappad

2020 film Thappad is a Hindi-drama about the happily-married life of Amrita, which turns upside down when her husband slaps her once losing his temper during a heated argument with his boss at their house party. The film discusses domestic violence, female dignity and complicated relationships in a very sensitive manner. It stars actors Taapsee Pannu, Pavail Gulati, Kumud Misra and Maya Sarao among others.
