Warner Bros. Discovery+ recently announced that a new TV show based on J.K. Rowling's iconic book Harry Potter  is in the works. The show will be televised on HBO Max. It is said to be a decade-long series featuring an entirely new cast. Each season will be based on one of the books in the franchise. The makers claim that it will be a "faithful adaptation" of the books, and JK Rowling will be the executive producer of the series.

"But why, why would anyone want to ruin Harry Potter for us?" screams the Potterhead within me. I belong to the generation that literally grew up with Harry Potter. I still don’t see Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson as the actors that they are. They are and will always be Harry, Ron, and Hermione to me! How could I even imagine, let alone watch someone else take their place? No matter how good the new cast will be, the Harry Potter  trio is not just a cast; it’s an emotion!

Besides, how are the makers planning to replace the late Alan Rickman, who played Severus Snape; Richard Harris, who played Albus Dumbledore; and Robbie Coltrane, who played Rubeus Hagrid? It’s not even remotely possible to replace these characters, who have etched themselves into our souls.

Harry Potter TV Show: Yay or Nay?

While I do admit that a lot of movies are remade and turn out to be successful, there are certain movies that should be left untouched. The original is a version that an entire generation holds close to their hearts; it would be best if left untouched.

"I’m highly doubtful about the new casting because no one can replace the golden trio—Harry, Ron, and Hermione are legacies, and legacies can’t be changed. However, I’m curious to see what the new series and cast have to offer. Also, if they are experimenting, it should match certain standards," said Snehal Mutha, a journalist.

Shreya Nanda, an interior designer, said, "I didn’t like it at all. I even commented on the same post. As someone who grew up watching Harry Potter, I’m emotionally connected to the cast, and I wouldn’t want them to be replaced. This would be the reply from any Harry Potter fan around the globe. The makers could either continue the series or just leave it untouched."

"I think it’s completely unnecessary because what is the innovation here? Of course, the movies missed out on some good points; for instance, they completely did away with the house elves and all. But everybody has read the book and watched the movie series. There are a lot of plays and games, so what more are they going to bring to the table? Also, the characters are connected to my childhood, and I don’t think anyone can match that," said Niharika, a social media manager.

The new adaptation of the iconic series could pave the way to improvise and modify the things that went wrong. For instance, as a Potterhead from India, I was deeply offended by the atrocious outfits that were given to Parvati Patil and Padma Patil for the Yule Ball. Also, the new cast could be more inclusive and diverse in terms of ethnicity. Moreover, a series could do more justice to the book, as it has the luxury of narrating the story better without omitting much from it.

Still, as a Harry Potter fan, I would prefer the franchise to be untouched. Why would the makers want to meddle with acclaimed work rather than come up with something new? More than the work itself, it’s the cast that we are connected to, and we would never want that to be replaced.

Hasn't Harry Potter been squeezed enough with a spin-off prequel titled Fantastic Beasts, the sequel Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and numerous video games and plays? If at all the makers carry on the Harry Potter legacy, why not make Harry Potter 9 with the same cast? At least, that would make sense. Otherwise, please leave it untouched.
