Ginny & Georgia comes with a lot of layers; the story runs parallel between the mother-daughter duo. The 15-year-old Ginny (Antonia Gentry) has always been moving with her mother Georgia (Brianne Howey), who keeps pulling off scams and takes an exit the moment she finds things are out of control. Georgia on other hand is full of secrets and her past is characterised by crime and all the decisions she made since she was 15 years old. Ginny & Georgia is the story of a smart young woman who desires stability and normalcy, but that has not been the case with Georgia. The series has moments where it makes us hate Georgia for being a careless mother who cannot see her daughter’s pain, she is also shown force behind everything that goes wrong. But the series very well captures the mother and her individuality.

Ginny & Georgia: Teenage Vs Adulthood

The series from a broader perspective sketches the life of Georgia from the age of 15 till her daughter is in her teens. It subtly shows the stark difference between what Georgia went through in her 15 because of her dysfunctional family wherein her stepfather has been cruel to her and her mother vulnerable to do anything. In order to survive she goes through several lows and highs. The boys and men throughout her life have been turning points. She left the house in search of a better life but the world failed her. All her life she dreamed of a man who could provide her security, stability, and all the happiness she deserved. At the age of attending school, she was earning herself bread and butter and fighting the world. Everyone she met tried to pawn on her. Her first boyfriend knocked her up and at the age of 15, and she conceived her daughter Ginny.

Ginny’s father and Georgia’s spouse leave to fulfil his aspiration, leaving behind Georgia all alone with his family to raise their daughter alone. She was naïve and scared of losing Ginny she ran away. Now it was about the survival of her daughter and herself. In between, she marries thrice only to find security and a better life for herself and Ginny. All she receives in return is humiliation, assault, and violence. To get rid of it Georgia commits crimes and becomes a murderer. In between, she struggles to meet ends and provide a decent life for Ginny. However, Georgia made sure she gives her daughter what she couldn’t have. And make sure she doesn’t become her or suffer as she did.

While doing so Georgia never forgot herself. Georgia used her charm and beauty to get her way, which may seem unreasonable for many, but that is how it was possible for Georgia, who had no qualifications to get a decent job. Georgia’s whole life stands for her struggle and wants to make life the best. Bring stability and money to live the life she always imagined. There was this feminine urge in her and a constant reminder of her individuality that despite having four marriages, she wanted her fifth wedding big, and fancy, with an expensive venue and gowns. She makes every attempt to get it and nothing seems wrong with that.

Teenage Georgia in the mother Georgia is still alive. She wants dates, respect, honour, and love. She wants friends whom she never had while moving, and she makes efforts to get into the neighbourhood club, as she was never part of a social group. Ginny blames Georgia for everything she did to protect her. Ginny has respect for her mother, and is happy about her wedding, at moments also trying to understand Georgia, but she fails to connect with Georgia’s individuality and what she has gone through. Through Ginny’s lens, her father becomes a hero at the last moment, in reality, he is responsible for everything that Georgia went through, and his daughter Ginny is suffering.

Georgia set a perfect example that she is not perfect just a human who did things to protect herself and her children. Georgia is not ashamed of her crimes; she will do it again if required. Georgia’s violence is not justified but some situations cannot be marked as black and grey. She represents all the women and mothers who go through a such situation but prevails like a queen.
