Why is marriage mandatory for a couple to live together or to start a family? How does a document guarantee commitment in a relationship? If it did, shouldn’t all married couples live a fairy-tale life? It’s all in the mind and partners could fall out of love or engage in infidelity or become abusive at any point in time whether or not the relationship is bonded by marriage.
Marriage is simply a social construct that was inducted into society following monogamous relationships. Marriage is a choice. If a couple wants to get married, they can do so or if they choose to stay committed to each other and loyal to the relationship they share without a symbol or document recognising them as a couple, they can do that too. Whether it's a marriage or a relationship, the only way to keep the couple together is if they consistently and equally contribute. If a couple falls out of love, no document or symbol can save that marriage.
Our country might have the lowest divorce rate but not all married couples are happy. Several couples hold on to their marriages just for the sake of family honour, children, or for several other wrong reasons. Don’t most of us know at least one couple who is just holding on to marriage for external reasons other than the love and respect they share for each other? Then how can society claim marriage to be sacred and ever-lasting?
A couple can lead a happy life together till their last breath only if they truly want to. A relationship or marriage will only last if there is solid trust, understanding, respect, love, support, compassion, loyalty, honesty, and friendship. Couples who aren’t married choose to stay with each other out of their personal choice and not because a document holds them accountable.
They are making a conscious choice to stay together through thick and thin every single day and if that’s not love, what is? That is a family bonded by true love and commitment. That is a healthy family and the perfect space for children to grow up in.
