From Gehraiyaan To Gangubai Kathiawadi, Hindi Films To Release In February 2022

The coronavirus pandemic has changed the course of many film releases in India. Some like Gangubai Kathiawadi scheduled release date kept shifting constantly. This has created a certain sense of suspense for moviegoers, especially as a list of releases for the coming month of February is out and people cannot wait to get back to theatres. But with mask, sanitiser and social distance, please!

The second year of 2022 has some interesting women-centric cinema enlisted. Few of these will have to be satisfied with an Over-The-Top release while others have been patiently waiting for theatres to reopen and work in full swing. Though till last month, most of the film release schedules were swiftly shifted due to the steep rise in Omicron variant of coronavirus number and the rise in COVID-19 cases all over India. These rising numbers are far from plateauing but the production houses have released the tentative dates for most of the upcoming Hindi films.

Gehraiyaan 

Release Date: February 11, 2022

The trailer of Deepika Padukone, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Ananya Pandey and Dhairya Karwa starrer film was released on January 20. The film is all set to release on Amazon Prime. It is directed and co-produced by Shakun Batra. The film is a modern-day urban take on relationships and the complexities binding them. It is not just a film on illicit love under the garb of finding the soulmate but realms into the unconventional boundaries of relationships.

Looop Lapeta 

Release Date: February 4, 2022

The Taapsee Pannu starrer thriller film is going to premiere on Netflix. Directed by Aakash Bhatia, the film stars Pannu and Tahir Raj Bhasin in the lead. It is the official remake of Run Lola Run, which is a German film starring Franka Potente and Moritz Bleibtreu. The film was supposed to release theatrically in February 2021 but due to the pandemic the release date was delayed and now it will be released directly on OTT. The plot revolves around Pannu and Bhasin's character as Pannu fights against the time to free her boyfriend by procuring money for his release in a limited time frame.

Badhaai Do 

Release Date: February 11, 2022

The film is a sequel to the hit film Badhaai Ho. The film is directed by Harshvardhan Kulkarni and stars Rajkummar Rao, Bhumi Pednekar and Chum Darang. The film is scheduled to be released theatrically on February 11. The trailer of the film suggests that the plot revolves around two main characters who are lesbian and gay. They enter a marriage of convenience and continue to date, other partners. However, the film has been criticised by the LGBTQ+ groups for promoting lavender weddings in a society that already stigmatises homosexual relationships and marriages.

Gangubai Kathiawadi 

Release Date: February 25, 2022

The film is finally scheduled to release in the coming month after consecutive delays. It stars Alia Bhatt and is directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The film is a biopic and Bhatt plays the lead role of a brothel owner Madam Gangu. It is based on the book, Mafia Queens of Mumbai, which is co-written by journalist Hussain Zaidi. The person on which the story is based was the only girl child in the family and she ran away to Mumbai with her father and was sold for sex work. Since then, she rose to power, using her links in the underworld. Her story is scheduled to unravel in theatres in the coming month.

Shabaash Mithu 

Release Date: February 4, 2022

The film starring Taapsee Pannu is going to release theatrically. The film is based on the Indian women cricketer Mithali Raj's life and career. It is directed by Srijit Mukherji. The release date of the film was announced on Raj's birthday. Raj has led the Indian Women Cricket team in two World Cups--2005 and 2017. She has been playing the sport for 22 years now and has created history by becoming the first Indian batswoman to score 10,000 international runs.
