Sharda Sinha Death: Folk Singer To Be Cremated With State Honours

Sharda Sinha, fondly known as Bihar Kokila, was a renowned folk singer and Padma Bhushan recipient. Several dignitaries like Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid their condolences after her death.

Renowned musician Sharda Sinha passed away at 72 due to complications of cancer, her family said on November 5. She was admitted to AIIMS Delhi's oncology department on October 25. Her son, Anshuman, said in a post on Instagram, "Your prayers and love will always be with mother. She has been called by Chhathi Maiya to her side." Sinha passed away on the first day of Chhath Puja, a festival when most of her compositions are popularly sung. In 2017, Sinha was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a cancer that affects the bone marrow.

Sharda Sinha, fondly known as Bihar Kokila, was a Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Sangeet Natak Akademi Award recipient. She was born in Supaul, Bihar, and was known for composing 'Chhath Geet' and 'Vivah Geet' in Maithili, Bhojpuri, and Magahi. Some of her music has also been in Hindi films like Maine Pyar Kiya, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, and Gangs of Wasseypur.

Sinha's son told Asian News International, "This is a sad time for us... It was in her aura and singing that captivated everyone and this is a shocker for all of them. I am sure her loved ones will be as sad as me. Her motherhood was clearly visible in her songs as well as in her personality. She left us on the first day of Chhath Puja...She will always be there in the hearts of people."

Speaking to the media, Manoj Tiwari confirmed, “Sharda Sinha’s last rites will be performed with state honours. Her mortal remains will be kept in Patna for the last darshan.”

The folk singer’s last rites will reportedly be performed on November 7.

Several dignitaries like Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former cabinet minister Smriti Irani paid their condolences after Sinha's passing. AIIMS Delhi reportedly said that the PM had been continuously checking on her condition before she passed. Union Health Minister JP Nadda visited AIIMS and prompted senior officials to ensure she gets the best care, sources said.
