FIR Against Payal Rohatgi: The Shivaji Nagar police station in Pune registered an FIR against actor Payal Rohatgi for a video with "objectionable" language against Mahatma Gandhi and the Nehru-Gandhi family members. Rohatgi had shared the video in concern on social media and Pune City Congress committee office bearers had registered a police complaint against the actor in connection to it.
The 36-year-old actor has been book under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 153 a (promoting communal disharmony).
Pune City Congress spokesperson Ramesh Iyer accused Rohatgi of repeatedly made derogatory comments about the Nehru Gandhi family. "We came across one such post, which we believe has been made recently," he said, adding that the office-bearers of the Pune City Congress committee, subsequently met senior police officials from the cyber crime cell. A formal complaint in the case was then registered by City Congress committee member Sangeet Tiwari after which a case was registered at Shivaji Nagar police station against Rohatgi.
This isn't the actor's first arrest for making defamatory remarks against Former Indian Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru and other members of his family. In 2019 the Rajasthan Police arrested Rohatgi from her Ahmedabad residence for a similar video.
The news of FIR against Payal Rohatgi was confirmed by Amitabh Gupta, Pune City Police Commissioner, who also revealed that a probe is currently underway in the case.
In June this year, Payal Rohatgi was arrested in Ahmedabad for allegedly threatening and sending abusive messages to the chairman of the society where she lives. Rohatgi had not only used obscene language against the chairperson, but had also allegedly threatened other members of the society of implicating them in false cases. Read more here.
