Oppenheimer To Barbie: Big Releases Scheduled This Week

This mid-July, we are expecting to see some huge releases both on the big and small screens. Two of the most anticipated movies are scheduled to hit screens: Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.

While there aren’t any big-screen releases in Bollywood, fans are in for a treat on the OTT platform. Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor’s first collaboration, Bawaal, will be released on Amazon Prime along with a few other shows on other OTT platforms.

Here’s a look at the list of big releases scheduled for this week.

Oppenheimer

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer narrates the story of a scientist and theoretical physicist, Julius Robert Oppenheimer, who developed the atomic bomb during World War II. The biographical thriller is based on the 2005 book American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. The film stars Cillian Murphy as the titular character, along with Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Kenneth Branagh, and Rami Malek as supporting characters. The film is bankrolled by Syncopy Inc. and Atlas Entertainment.

The film is scheduled to release on July 21, 2023, in theatres.

Barbie

The second big release this week is Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. The new instalment of the Barbie film features the life of the fictional toy character Barbie’s journey into the real world. The movie has been highly anticipated since the release of its first look. The pink-tanned trailer for the film seems to have raised expectations for the film. Barbie will star Margot Robbie as the titular character and Ryan Gosling as Ken.

The movie will be released in theatres on July 21, 2023.

Bawaal

Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor’s first collaboration, Bawaal, is a film directed by Nitesh Tiwari. The romantic drama will be released on Amazon Prime Video. The plot follows the lead characters' journey from meeting each other to getting married and navigating through the challenges of married life. The film is set parallel to World War II in Europe, where the couple is honeymooning. Bawaal is produced by Sajid Nadiadwala and Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari under Nadiawala Grandson Entertainment and Earthsky Pictures.

The film will release on Prime Video on July 21, 2023.

They Cloned Tyrone

The Netflix comedy film narrates the journey of hustlers who stumble upon a secret lab that has been cloning people in their small town. They learn that their friend Tyrone has been cloned, leading the unlikely trio to set out on a venture to uncover the mysterious government conspiracy that has also been providing drugs and some kind of chemical to the people. The film stars Jamie Foxx, John Boyega, and Teyonah Parris in lead roles, among others. The science fiction is directed by debutant Juel Taylor.

The film is scheduled for release on Netflix on July 21, 2023.

Special OPS: Lioness

The spy thriller series is directed by Taylor Sheridan. It follows a mariner who is given the task of befriending the daughter of a suspected terrorist who is under the surveillance of the US CIA. The show stars Zoe Saldana, Laysla De Oliveria, and Dave Annabel in lead roles. The series will start premiering on Paramount + on July 23, 2023.
