Veteran actor Farida Jalal is celebrating her 73rd birthday on March 14th this year. She had a successful fifty-year career in the Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil film industries, appearing in over 200 films.

Taqdeer was Jalal's first work (1967). She starred in several films in the 1970s and early 1980s, both as the main and supporting actor. She is most known for her roles in the films Paras (1971), Henna (1991), and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), all of which won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Female Actor. She even played a romantic role opposite Rajesh Khanna in Aradhana. After performing motherly roles and powerful female characters in the 1990s and early 2000s, she became a household name.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge:

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (often abbreviated as DDLJ) is a 1995 Hindi-language musical romantic film. Simran's (Kajol's) mother is played by Jalal as Lajwanti "Lajjo" Singh. Simran dreams of meeting her ideal lover, but her mother, Lajjo, warns her against it, stating that while dreams are great, they always don't come true. When she finds that her daughter is really in love with a man, she advises her to live her life with him and not to sacrifice her happiness. She also advises the man and Simran to flee.

 Jalal played Shah Rukh Khan's mother in the film which was released in 1998, and she was seen taking care of her granddaughter, Anjali. She wants her son to remarry, and she's on board with her granddaughter's plans to have her son marry his closest friend after years apart.

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham:

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, or simply K3G, is a 2001 Hindi-language family drama film from India. In the multi-starrer film, Jalal played Sayeeda Naaz/Daijan, the nanny of Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) and Rohan (Hrithik Roshan). She not only looks after them, but she is also Kajol and Kareena Kapoor Khan's aunt in the film, and she cares for both women when their father dies while they were young.

Kya Kehna:

Kya Kehna is a 2000 Hindi romantic drama. Priya Bakshi (Preity Zinta) learns that she is pregnant with her former boyfriend and Farida Jalal plays her mother, Rohini Bakshi. When she decides to keep the child, her family first opposes her decision. Her mother, on the other hand, not only brings her back but also looks after her and supports her during her pregnancy.

Student Of The Year:

Student of the Year is a coming-of-age romantic comedy-drama from 2012. Jalal as Sushma Singh, plays Sidharth Malhotra's (Abhi) grandmother. After the death of his parents, Abhi lives with his uncle, aunty and grandma in a middle-class household. Her grandmother is the sole person in his family who loves and supports him, but she too passes on during the course of the film.

 Farida Jalal was last seen in Saif Ali Khan, Aaliya F, and Tabu starrer Jawaani Jaaneman where she played the role of Khan's mother. She has also been part of popular sitcoms like  Dekh Bhai Dekh and Shararat.
