Derry Girls Season 3, Erin And James Romance:

Erin Quinn is played by Saoirse-Monica Jackson. She is 16 years old when the series begins, and she is passionate and ambitious with literary ambitions, but she can be vain or overly preoccupied with how others perceive her.

James Maguire is played by Dylan Llewellyn. Michelle's maternal cousin, grew up in London but moved to Derry to live with his aunt just before the series begins. Out of concern for the safety of an English kid at the local Christian Brothers school, James becomes the first male student at Our Lady Immaculate College. Despite his protests, everyone in Derry assumes he is gay.

According to reports, Lisa McGee (writer-creator) stated that there "might be" a romance between the two characters, however she also said, "I’ve always thought James likes her, but I think he maybe doesn’t even understand that yet, and I don’t know when that’ll... It might happen when they’re much older, so it might not actually happen in our show."

Reportedly, actors also talked about this romantic angle. Jackson stated that there was "definitely a spark" between her(Erin) and James. Llewellyn has indicated his desire for James and Erin to be a couple in Season 3, but he has also stated that he would be happy with whatever McGee writes. Nicola Coughlan, who plays Clare Devlin, an intelligent and studious character who is frequently the voice of reason in the gang, had previously hinted at the budding romance between Erin and James.
