Canadian actor Elliot Page, who came out as transgender in December, revealed that he underwent surgery to remove his breasts. The Umbrella Academy actor got top surgery as part of his transgender journey and to achieve a more masculine appearance.
Page graced the new cover of the Time magazine and in an interview with the publication referred to his puberty phase as “total hell”. The 34-year-old actor asserted that the surgery doesn’t define his gender but allows him to recognize himself. After publicly coming out through a social media post, this interview is the first time the actor has spoken up about his decision.
"I wanted to be a boy. I would ask my mom if I could be someday," said Elliot, who became a professional actor at the age of ten.
The Juno star’s journey to "embracing being transgender" began in the isolation imposed on us due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Sharing the cover page of the magazine on Instagram, the actor wrote, “With deep respect for those who came before me, gratitude for those who have supported me and great concern for the generation of trans youth we must all protect, please join me and decry anti-trans legislation, hate and discrimination in all its forms”.
Page is back to her habitat and shooting for the upcoming season of the Netflix series The Umbrella Academy. Following the actor’s previous announcement, the streaming platform declared Elliot’s return for the show’s third Season and Variety confirmed that the show won’t make any changes to his character.
Elliot Page comes out as transgender
As 2020 ended, Elliot Page, took to Twitter to come out as transgender and changed his pronouns to he/they. Previously, in 2014, the actor had come out as gay.
“I can't begin to express how remarkable it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self," Elliot wrote in his social media announcement.
"And I love that I am queer. And the more I hold myself close and fully embrace who I am, the more I dream, the more my heart grows and the more I thrive," he further said.
"To all trans people who deal with harassment, self-loathing, abuse, and the threat of violence every day: I see you, I love you, and I will do everything I can to change this world for the better," he concluded.
Emma Portner, the wife of the Oscar-nominated actor, came in support of her partner and congratulated him on coming out. Taking to her Instagram, she wrote: “I am so proud of Elliot Page”.
“Trans, queer and non-binary people are a gift to this world. I also ask for patience & privacy but that you join me in the fervent support of trans life every single day. Elliot’s existence is a gift in and of itself. Shine on sweet E. Love you so much,” Portner said.
Elliot-Emma part ways
In the following month, the couple filed for divorce after three years of marriage. Page and Portner, in a joint statement, announced the news on social media.
“After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce following our separation last summer,” the statement said.
Elliot Page and Emma Porter, both Canadian born, reportedly met on Instagram. Page opened up about their marriage in 2017 when the actor captioned their picture which read, “Can’t believe I get to call this extraordinary woman my wife.”

In 2017, he received a GLAAD Media Award nomination for his Gaycation documentary series, based on LGBTQ cultures around the world.
