One of the most anticipated documentary features releasing this year is The Mystery of Marilyn Monroe which follows the 1992 investigation around the mysterious death of Hollywood star Marilyn Monroe. Docufilm The Mystery of Marilyn Monroe is set to release on April 27, 2022 on Netflix. The documentary features archival interviews and videos which dive deep into the secrets of the scandalous life of the starlet who was found dead under controversial circumstances in 1962.

The Keepers

Netflix docuseries The Keepers follows the unsolved murder of sister Cathy Cesnik, a nun and a Catholic High School teacher in Baltimore in the year 1969. After her disappearance in November 1969, the nun's body was found two months later yet her murderer remains unknown till this date. However, the case was reopened when one of her former students claimed that she had been sexually abused by the school's chaplain who threatened her by taking her to Cesnik's corpse. Various conversations with friends, relatives and journalists attempt to reveal the real truth behind her murder, while also highlighting the systemic sexual abuse of numerous students at the institution. The Keepers is directed by Ryan White.

The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann

This 2019 Netflix documentary series follows the investigation behind the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, a three-year-old girl who went missing on a holiday with her parents from a seaside resort in Portugal. The series is directed by Chris Smith and star actors Anthony Summers, Gonçalo Amaral and Robbyn Swan. It explores how the media and other factors took part in shaping the narrative of the investigation, leading detectives to believe that the toddler's parents had a part to play in the disappearance of their daughter.

Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills 

HBO's Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills was well received by the audience and even won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Informational Programming. The docufilm is created by Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky and follows the trial of three teenagers accused of the murders and sexual mutilation of three boys over whom they allegedly performed a satanic ritual. The film attempts to unveil many angles and perceptions regarding the boys, murders, satanic rituals as well as trials. The film was also follows by two sequels which followed the course of the case over the years.

The Death and Life of Marsha P Johnson

This 2017 Netflix docufilm follows the story of Marsha P Johnson- a trans-activist who fought against the injustices suffered by the gay community in America. Directed by David France, the film re-examines the mysterious death of the activist in 1992 as it takes into consideration interviews with family, friends and officials. Johnson's dead body was found in the Hudson River, and while the police ruled it as a suicide case, the deceased's friends and close one believe that it was a covered-up murder.

The Imposter

Released in 2012, The Imposter follows the 1997 case of French trickster Frédéric Bourdin, who deceived a family into believing that he was their long-lost son, Nicholas Barclay, who went missing at the age of 13. The Imposter is directed by Bart Layton. The film documents interviews with Bourdin, the Barclays and the archived news footages along with a few dramaticised scenes. The docufilm narrates how the trickster was almost able to pull off his deception with the Barclays yet what happened to the young boy still remains unknown.
