Bollywood actor Dilip Kumar passes away at 98 and the nation has been plunged into mourning. Kumar, one of India's legendary actors, had been suffering from age-related health issues for the last few weeks and was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of Mumbai's Hinduja Hospital on June 30.

He was one of Indian cinema’s greatest actors. Born Yusuf Khan — known to the world as Dilip Kumar — he passed away at the age of 98. He delivered audiences some spectacular films like Naya Daur, Saudagar, Andaz, Babul, Mughal-e-Azam among many others.

A former star and Kumar's wife Saira Banu had been with him throughout and had assured fans that his condition was stable. Banu's last tweet was about his health. He was still in ICU and the family wanted to take him home but they were waiting for doctors' approval as they know his medical condition, his wife had mentioned.

What was Dilip Kumar Suffering From?

He was diagnosed with bilateral pleural effusion -- an illness build-up following excess fluid between the layers of the pleura outside the lungs. He underwent a successful pleural aspiration procedure and was released from the hospital. Actor Akshay Kumar remembers Dilip Kumar with a tweet that reads: "To the world many others may be heroes. To us actors, he was The Hero. #DilipKumar Sir has taken an entire era of Indian cinema away with him."

"Rest in the highest realms of glory Sir," actor Nimrat Kaur posted on Twitter adding, "thank you for driving our cinema towards the echelons of excellence."

Actor and social worker Sonu Sood wrote, "Legends don't go anywhere, They just change the stage. #RipDilipKumar sir."

Kunal Kohli tweeted saying, "Every time you see a film of his you discover something new in his performance. Legend. Institution of acting."

Calling him "the greatest", Hansal Mehta took to Twitter to post, "There will never be another Dilip Kumar." Vir Das tweeted, "We lost a legend. Rest in peace #DilipKumar."

Rahul Gandhi also shared his condolences tweeting, "My heartfelt condolences to the family, friends & fans of Dilip Kumar ji. His extraordinary contribution to Indian cinema will be remembered for generations to come." Ronit Bose Roy wrote, "Will never forget the Hot brun pao and butter."

 

Dilip Kumar, was not merely a living legend who has straddled the celluloid firmament like a colossus over the last five decades—he was far above that unattainable peak of fame. Instead he was on a loftier pedestal in the hearts of legions of admirers encompassing several generations. With the millions of hearts he had stolen with his charm and romantic style it is then little wonder that so many years later the legendary thespian’s work continues to be both admired and studied by actors even now.
