Actor Delnaaz Irani claimed that the rise of influencers and the introduction of casting directors have resulted in a lack of offers for roles in significant projects.
In a recent interview, actor Delnaaz Irani stated that she intends to "take the Neena Gupta route" and plead movie and television producers to cast. Irani is best known for her supporting role in the popular 2003 movie Kal Ho Naa Ho. She has since appeared in a number of TV shows and reality series, but not in any significant theatrical release since 2011's Ra. One.
Irani claimed during a conversation with RJ Siddharth Kannan that the emergence of social media influencers, a lack of funding for the salaries of supporting cast members, and the growing influence of casting directors have caused actors from her generation to fade from view.
Delnaaz Irani Pleads For Work
"I'm no Neena Gupta," she said in Hindi, "but maybe someone will watch this and something will work out." She continued, "in contrast to most others, after becoming well-known through Kal Ho Naa Ho, she did not sign with agencies or managers. Direct contact with the directors and producers once existed. After seeing Kal Ho Naa Ho, Satish Kaushik called me. That connection is no longer there. It involves more of an uphill battle with casting directors. I'm still trying to figure out the whole middle structure that's there. As I said, you need to visit their offices. There’s a lot of groupism, and camps."

She remarked on the rise of social media influencers, "My friends have told me that casting directors aren't giving them work because they don't have blue ticks on social media. These actors have played leads for the past 20 years in the industry." Seeing "overnight superstars" succeed while those who have worked tirelessly for years in the industry are left behind, she claimed, makes her sad.
She has recently made appearances on television shows in an effort to shed her reputation as the bubbly best friend. But these days, she claimed, producers are reluctant to spend money on supporting cast members. According to her, some actors with more stable financial situations can afford to decline offers for a number of years, but 'too much stubbornness is also not good,' as there is a possibility that you could go "out of sight, out of mind."
