Ayushmann Khurrana's Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui plot revolves around a love story between a gym trainer and possibly a trans woman. Since his debut in Vicky Donor, Khurrana has chosen roles and stories that challenge societal norms. Ayushmann has taken on another challenging role in Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui, in which he co-stars with Vaani Kapoor. The trailer depicts a gender-bending romance.
Trans representation has always been a problem in Bollywood. For a long time, the community and its members have been stereotyped and exploited for fear or amusement. In recent years, there is not been so much change in this depiction of queer people. Due to misrepresentation, the film Laxmii, directed by Akshay Kumar and released in 2020, offended the trans community.
Then there was Kubbra Sait's Kockoo in Sacred Games. Ganesh Gaitonde's (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) and Kockoo's love stories were not only unique but also daring. You'd think that with shows and plots like these, OTT platforms would shatter stereotypes. Mainstream Bollywood, on the other hand, is a completely different story. Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui’s plot, from the trailer, gives us an idea that both Vaani and Ayushmaan have taken up daring roles. Let’s see when the movie releases if it’s able to impress the audience or not.
According to the trailer for &t=24s">Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui, a weight-lifting champion Manvinder, played by Ayushmann Khurrana, falls hard when Maanvi Brar, played by Vaani Kapoor, comes to his gym to teach Zumba classes. They have a passionate love affair, but it all comes crashing down when Manvinder discovers Maanvi's true gender. We must note fact that the trailer does not explicitly reveal or preach anything about Maanvi's physicality. But there are speculations that the love story of a trans character will be depicted on screen for the first time in Bollywood.
Bollywood has long used the LGBTQ community as a comic foil, making insensitive and inappropriate jokes about them or outright shaming them be it’s Kantaben’s homophobia in Kal Ho Naa Ho or Dostana’s funny angle of gay depiction. Of course, this is changing, and even the most commercial Bollywood films are starting to do so, casting cisgender and heterosexual actors to play queer characters.
Additional yet important cast includes Leena Sharma, Abhishek Bajaj, Kanwaljit Singh, Ritika Shrotri, Gourav Sharma, Gautam Sharma, Girish Dhamiha, Yograj Singh, and others,
The chemistry between Ayushmann Khurrana and Vaani Kapoor, who are working together for the first time, will be fascinating to observe.
